Yes, it appears that the "Import .stf file" feature will do exactly what I 
want. The "back annotation" description confused me because I think of 
back-annotation as updating the schematic references based on how they may have 
been changed during layout. Apparantly the KiCad concept of back annotation is 
to add "add footprint names" back to the schematic since they were assigned in 
the layout tool. Does KiCad have a way of doing the "changed references" type 
of back annotation?

Choosing parts from a "Parts File" instead of a symbol library would be very 
nice. As a minimum, each Part record needs a IDnumber, a SymbolName, a Value 
and a FootPrintName. The IDNumber (ie my company's partnumber) would be the key 
into my company database where all the other data (vendor info, costs, etc) 
would be.
