why not just give the 2009-02-16 final a try - it's tagged as centos but
it's a binary rather than a program that needs compiling. so you just
need to place it in the correct place, run a quick chmod on a directory
and that's it. It works fine on SUSE and I don't think thetre will be any
problems with Deb

Test it in a VM first if you feel better doing that.
