Well, two reasons to recommend ViewMate. At least a couple of board houses
recommended it in their "do this before you submit" checklists. Also
specifically because it's outside of the Kicad family, to avoid potentially
shared assumptions regarding how to generate and then to interpret the Gerber
and drill files.
I'm surprised it won't run under Wine but given that is the case, give your
boards a look with gEDA's viewer for another opinion.
