gerbv will do what you describe in your post, but I've not used GC-Prevue so I don't know how it compares. I'm reasonably happy with gerbv; it works nicely alongside kicad.
IMHO it is better to use a Gerber viewer that is not connected with the package that created the Gerbers as that minimises the chance of a single programmer making the same mistake twice.
