Nope. They are not the same. What I will do in this case is to boot using Knoppix, navigate my way to the Xorg.conf file, and change the resolution for the device setting to 800x600 and restart.

Ubuntu doesn't ask for a root password. Rather, the first user has admin priviledges. After logging in, you can open terminal then 'sudo passwd root', then enter the new password for root. You can then change the Login settings of Ubuntu in the Administration section to allow root to login to GUI.

i lowered the frequency to 60Hz and my monitor resolution to 800x600.

P.S.
i installed ubuntu last night but then the installation didn't ask for any root password, just the user. is it normal or is there something wrong during my installation? :)
