You can also use iperf (http://dast.nlanr.net/Projects/Iperf/) for "pumping" data. By default, it will try to exhaust the maximum bandwidth of your NIC - and - it has lots of other nifty options. I haven't tried it in Linux but I guess it would also be a good alternative.
