As far as I can remember, my SmartBro setup was this:

Canopy --> network cable attached to that "small black box" --> small black
box connected to both power adapter and LAN cable to PC.

I think it just serves as an interface. That was the setup from a year ago.
I don't know if they have changed it or something.
