Kim Jong Il guides work in various fields of national economy
Pyongyng, August 29 (KCNA) - General Secretary Kim Jong Il guided the
work in various fields of the national
economy in South Hamgyong Province on August 26 and 27. During his
on-the-spot guidance Kim Jong Il inspected
power stations built on the River Songchon, the June 4 Plant, the Tongbong
Cooperative Farm in Hamju county and
other units.
The first leg of his visit was the Songchongang Power Station no. 32.
Seeing outside and inside of the modern power station, he acquainted
himself in detail with its construction and
operation. He was greatly satisfied to learn that Hamhung University of
hydraulic power and the provincial people's
security bureau have built a modern power station capable of producing a
lot of electricity by harnessing the unused
water.
He also went round the Songchongang Power Station nos. 29 and 30 in
Yonggwang town, Yonggwang county
and was greatly satisfied to know that the county has met its demand for
electricity and realized the electrical heating for
many dwelling houses.
After visiting the terraced minor power stations on the Songchon River,
he advanced highly important tasks which
would serve as guidelines in increasing the output of electricity and
making an effective use of it.
Then he inspected the June 4 Plant at which he dropped in processing,
grinding and finishing shops to learn about
production there.
He also moved to the Tongbong Cooperative Farm in Hamju county where he
aquainted himself with details of the
farming and was greatly satisfied to learn that the requirements of the
Juche method of farming have been fully met.
He highly appreciated the agricultural workers of this farm for
accumulating precious experience in double and
treble cropping.
In order to raise the grain yield it is necessary to strictly observe
the principle of right crop on right soil and in the
right time and research into and develop high-yielding seeds suited to our
country's climatic and soil conditions, he
said.
Accompanying him on site-guidance was first vice department directors
of the WPK central committee Pak Song
Bong and Ri Yong Chol, chief secretary of the South Hamgyong Provincial
Committee of the WPK Ri Thae Nam, and
chairman of the South Hamgyong Provincial People's Committee Kim Phung Gi.
DPRK hard hit by torrential rain
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- Different parts of the DPRK were hard
hit by abnormal weather in August.
The recent abnormal weather was characterized by the torrential rain that
hit some areas in a short time.
Downpour registered over 200-300 mm in Phyonggang, Kimhwa, Kosong,
Thongchon, Anbyon and other
counties in Kangwon Province, leaving hundreds of houses and scores of
public buildings submerged or destroyed.
several sections of railways and road were destroyed and power and
communications networks were totally cut.
Human losses were also reported from different areas.
In Kimhwa county, in particular, two hour-long downpour registering
over 230 mm left at least 150 dwelling
houses inundated.
The water level of the Tuman River rose so suddenly in the Onsong area
of North Hamgyong Province that more
than 400 surrounding houses were inundated and thousands of hectares of
paddy and non-paddy fields buried under
silt.
The torrential rain that hit some areas including Hyesan and Samsu
county of Ryanggang Province left Hyesan
Railway Station and industrial establishments submerged and caused
unexpected losses to different sectors of the
national economy including city administration and land management.
Hyesan was struck by big flood three times in August.
Houses for more than 1,000 families were inundated.
Torrential rain and hail did big damage to crops in Rinsan, Unpha,
Singye and other areas of north Hwanghae
Province.
40 minute long rainfall of 155 mm accompanied by wind over 20 m/s was
followed by 30-40 mm hail.
Torrential rain did damage to tens of thousands of hectares of paddy
and non-paddy fields in different areas in
North Phyongan Province, including Pakchon, Chonma, Thaechon, Uiju and Kusong.
Big landslide was reported from the Tanchon area of South Hamgyong
Province. The landslide by downpour, hail
and thunder caused serious damage to the mining sector, in particular.
Continued survey is made of damage.
Heavy rain, together with typhoon, is expected to hit all areas of the
country.
Hong Chang Su emerges as world pro-boxing champion
Tokyo, August 28 (KNS-KCNA) -- Hong Chang Su, 25, Korean pro-boxer
under the General Association of
Korean Residents in Japan, punched down the South Korean world champion by
a 3-0 decision in the World Super
Flyweight Championship Tournament of the World Boxing Council held in japan
on August 27. It was the first time in
the history of pro-boxing that a Korean boxer in Japan won the world
championship.
Hong took the initiative in the match from the beginning through
blistering attacks and knocked down the
opponent with the right hand hit in the fourth round.
Anniversary of opening of DPRK-Cuba diplomatic relations observed
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- Papers here today significantly observe
the 40th anniversary of the
establishment of diplomatic relations between the DPRK and Cuba. Rodong
Sinmun in an editorial article says that the
opening of diplomatic relations between the DPRK and Cuba 40 years back was
a landmark event in developing the
friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries in all fields
and a telling blow to the imperialists'
despicable anti-Cuba blockade.
Over the last 40 years the two peoples have fully demonstrated the
might of their friendly ties, fighting alongside in
the same trench to build socialism, the article says, and goes on:
The Korean people have expressed militant solidarity for the Cuban
people in their struggle to beat back the
imperialists' aggression and interference and defend the gains of the
revolution since the very day of the victory of the
Cuban revolution.
The Cuban people have extended positive support and solidarity to the
Korean people advancing under the uplifted
red flag despite the imperialists' encirclement.
The invincible might of the Korea-Cuba friendship has been further
increased on the basis of the intimate
relationship between the great Kim Il Sung, the eternal leader of the
Korean people, and Fidel Castro, the supreme
leader of the Cuban people.
The Cuban people have made great achievements in their struggle to foil
the imperialists' vicious moves to stifle
Cuba and defend the motherland, the revolution and the gains of socialism,
united close around the communist party of
Cuba headed by respected Fidel Castro.
They are steadfastly advancing along the road of socialism under the
slogan "Socialism or death, we will win ".

Youth Day marked
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- The Korean youths significantly marked
the 9th Youth Day. Party and state
senior officials including premier of the cabinet Hong Song Nam, secretary
of the central committee of the Workers'
Party of Korea Kye Ung Thae and leading officials of party and power organs
and working people's organizations in
the capital and local areas, ministries and national institutions Monday
went to the construction site of
Pyongyang-Nampho Motorway, the Hwanghae Iron and Steel Works, the Chollima
Steel Plant, the Sangwon Cement
Factory, the Pukchang Thermal Power Station and other industrial
establishments, cooperative farms and universities
to join the youth enjoying their holiday.
They conversed with officials and members of the youth league and
joined them in sports and amusement games.
Young shock brigade members for the construction of Pyongyang-Nampho
Motorway presented 50,000 man
chorus "General Is Our Father" on the bank of lake Thaesong on Aug. 28, the
Youth Day.
That day, evening galas of youth and students were held in Pyongyang
and local areas.
Meanwhile, a music and dance performance of the art propaganda squad of
the central committee of the youth
league "General and Youth" and a River Taedong crossing contest of school
youth and children in Pyongyang were
held on Aug. 27.
Three-Revolution Red Flag Movement waged by WPK
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- The Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) has
vigorously pushed ahead with the
Three-Revolution Red Flag Movement in keeping with the new requirements of
the developing revolution since the
middle of the 1970s. The Three-Revolution Red Flag Movement, which came
into being as a result of the development
of the Chollima Work-Team Movement in depth, is the highest level mass
movement involving all people to accelerate
socialist construction through vigorous ideological, technical and cultural
revolutions.
The WPK saw to it that a torch was lighted to launch the movement at
the Komdok Mine and the Chongsan
Cooperative Farm at the end of Juche 64 (1975) and rapidly spread to all
fields of socialist construction across the
country. It put up the revolutionary slogan "Let us meet the requirements
of Juche in ideology, technology and culture
and "Let the whole party and all the people turn out in the movement while
converting it into one of the popular masses
themselves.
In the crucible of the movement people's mode of thinking and work
style underwent a radical change, the
revolutionary enthusiasm of the masses rapidly mounted and many
three-revolution standard bearers, unassuming
heroes and heroines and unassuming men of meritorious services were produced.
In a little more than 10 years after the start of the movement, the
Tower of the Juche Idea, the arch of triumph, the
Changgwang Street, Munsu Street, the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital,
Changgwang Health Complex and other grand
monumental edifices were built to change the appearance of the country
beyond recognition.
The world-level west sea barrage and ore pressing plant no. 3 of the
Komdok Mine with an annual production
capacity of 10 million tons made their appearance and miracles such as the
manufacture of a 10,000-ton press were
reported one after another to augment the economic power of the country
significantly.
The industrial production in the period of the second seven-year plan
(1978-1984) showed an annual growth of
12.2 percent.
The successful implementation of the WPK's policy on intellectualizing
all members of society led to the
appearance of hundreds of thousands of intellectuals and brought about a
radical change in the people's cultural and
moral life.
The WPK clarified principled issues and ways to further develop the
movement through various meetings
including the meeting of the three revolution team members held in 1984 and
the meeting of the frontrankers in the
Three-Revolution Red Flag Movement in 1986.
The WPK has brought a new peak to the socialist construction by
ensuring that the movement was conducted in
close combination with various mass movements including drives to create
the "Speed of the 80s" and the "Speed of
the 90s". at least 10,000 units have won the Three-Revolution Red Flag.
Executive director of KEDO arrives
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- The executive director of the Korean
Peninsula Energy Development
Organization (KEDO) and his party arrived here today by air to visit the
DPRK for the construction of light water
reactors.
Delegation of south side arrives
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- The delegation of the south side headed
by Unification Minister Pak Jae Gyu
arrived here today to participate in the 2nd round of the north-south
ministerial talks, authorities to authorities talks to
