Kim Jong Il visits Kalma Resort of KPA
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) - Leader Kim Jong Il visited the Kalma
Resort of the KPA and met holiday-makers on August 28. Kim Jong Il entered
the spacious hall of the resort to meet the pilots who were spending a
pleasant holiday and have a cordial talk with them.
He learned in detail about their vacationing and expressed the belief
that the pilots would get more firmly prepared physically during their
vacationing to gain greater success in carrying out their duties.
He saw a bedroom for pilots, mess, kitchen and other supply and service
establishments of the resort, looking after their living with his warm
paternal affection.
Saying that best vacationing conditions should be provided to
holiday-makers because pilots and other soldiers of the people's army are
the most precious revolutionary comrades and comrades-in-arms, he put
forward detailed tasks for the management and operation of the resort.
He then appreciated a performance given by the merited chorus of the KPA
honored with "Kim Il Sung Order" together with pilots and their families on
their holidays.
He acknowledged the enthusiastic cheers of the performers and audience
and congratulated them on their successful performance.

Kim Jong Il inspects frontline posts of KPA
29 (KCNA) - Leader Kim Jong Il inspected frontline posts under KPA unit
no. 2796 yesterday. He was accompanied by KPA generals Ri Myong Su, Hyon
Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong.
After receiving a salute, Kim Jong Il climbed up to a forward
observation post and acquainted himself in detail with the topographical
conditions, the deployment of forces and the performance of duties at
frontline posts.
He was greatly satisfied to learn that the servicemen at the posts are
reliably standing guard over the defense line of their motherland, firmly
armed with the Juche-oriented military tactics of the WPK and replete with
the noble patriotic determination to firmly defend the socialist motherland
by force of arms. He set forth important tasks to be fulfilled to increase
the combat capacity of the posts.
After learning about the revolutionary and class education at the posts,
he highly appreciated the class education being conducted at the posts in
diverse forms and ways and in a unique manner to suit the characteristic
features of young soldiers. He underscored the need to pay primary attention
to ideological education and train all soldiers to be ideologically strong
fighters.
He looked round their bedroom, mess, daily provision store, washroom and
other logistic facilities to learn in detail about the supply service at the
posts and take warm care of their living with paternal affection.
He gave them a pair of binoculars, a machine gun and an automatic rifle
as gifts and posed for a souvenir picture with them at a trench on the
height.

Gift to Kim Jong Il from director general of UNFAO
Pyongyang August 29 (KCNA) -- Leader Kim Jong Il was presented with a
gift by the director general of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the
United Nations. The gift was handed to Kim Yong Nam, President of the
Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, yesterday by director
general Jacques Diouf who is on a visit to the DPRK.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arrest of U.S. criminal demanded in S. Korea
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- The Green Federation of South Korea on
August 23 demanded a warrant for the arrest of the director of the mortuary
of the U.S. military base in Ryongsan, who had been referred to trial for
the leakage of poisonous substance into the River Han, according to MBC from
Seoul. The federation said that it would input to its home page a warrant
for the arrest of him who was indicted by the South Korean court but denied
jurisdiction, and inform the subscribers of his movement. It declared that
it would inform an international public organization of this fact and open
the environmental pollution by the U.S. troops to the U.S. environment
organization and others to jointly condemn it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
DPRK swimmers carry off gold medals at Asian swimming championships
Beijing, August 28 (KCNA) -- DPRK swimmers placed first in 4
synchronized swimming events at the first Asian swimming championships held
in Hong Kong, China, from August 24 to 26. Participating in the
championships were over 700 swimmers from 22 Asian countries and regions.
The participants, divided into class a (13-15 age) and class b (16-18
age), competed in single and double events.
Jang Ok Sun of class A and Choe Yon Mi of class B finished first in
single events on Aug. 25.
Tokgo Pom and Yun Hui of class A, Hwang Su Jong and Kim Pun Hui of class
B placed first in the double events on Aug. 26.

KCNA on moves for U.S.-Japan military integration
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- The U.S.-Japan ties aimed to meet each
other's interests are now being tightened to round off their military
integration. Recently, the vice-president of the heritage foundation, a
think-tank of the U.S. conservatives, called for the revision of article 9
of the Japanese constitution, asserting that Japan has reason enough to
develop its deterrent and defence capabilities to counter missiles of North
Korea and other countries. Meanwhile, the commander of the U.S. forces in
Japan stressed the need to strengthen the bilateral military cooperation
based on the "U.S.-Japan guidelines for military cooperation".
This evidently shows that the united states is keen to strengthen its
military ties and conspiracy and round off its military integration with
Japan by instigating the Japanese militarists.
As already known, the revision of article 9 of the Japanese
constitution, which "bans the exercise of the right to collective
self-defence", will enable the Japanese reactionaries, always preoccupied by
revanchism and militarism even after Japan's defeat in the war, to rapidly
step up its rearmament and the moves to turn it into a military power. And
it will also provide a legal guarantee for their legitimate overseas
aggression.
The U.S. seeks to establish the Missile Defence system (MD) at any cost
for the execution of its world strategy and puts forward Japan seized by
militarism as a shock brigade for this.
It is evidenced by its assertion that the establishment of MD means to
"build a shield protecting Japan's territory from ballistic missile attack"
and an obstruction to the MD development is a present interpretation of
article 9.
Meanwhile, a "plan for mutual cooperation" based on "the U.S.-Japan
guidelines for military cooperation", which stipulates Japan's participation
and cooperation in any war of intervention to be conducted by the U.S.
abroad, will reportedly be submitted to the "U.S.-Japan Security
Consultative Committee" for the first time. This is a step to complete the
bilateral military ties and integration, a move in contravention of article
9.
In the Cold War era the United States and Japan justified their
"security treaty" and military ties based on it as a step to cope with
"threat of the Soviet Union". after the end of the Cold War they set out the
theory of "threat from North Korea" to maintain their ties and go ahead with
their military integration.
Their relations are nothing but a dangerous military tie-up aimed at
domination over the Asia-Pacific region including the Korean peninsula.
Such military ties have nothing to do with regional peace, security and
prosperity. The U.S. and Japan should immediately stop the moves for
military integration which pushes the regional situation to a grave phase.

Kim Yong Nam meets FAO director general
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- Kim Yong Nam, President of the Presidium
of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK, met and conversed with Jacques
Diouf, director general of the United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organization, and his party on a visit to the DPRK at the Mansudae Assembly
Hall yesterday. Present there was vice foreign minister Choe Su Hon.
Jacques highly appreciated many achievements made by the Korean people
in the efforts to overcome natural disasters under the wise guidance of
leader Kim Jong Il.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Youth Day marked
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- Senior party and state officials
including Hong Song Nam, Han Song Ryong, Kye Ung Thae, Yon Hyong Muk, Choe
Thae Bok and Yang Hyong Sop, and leading officials of provincial, city and
county party and power organs and working people's organizations spent the
Youth Day (August 28) with young people at the Pyongyang Textile Mill, the
Sangwon Cement Complex, the Chongsan co-op Farm in Kangso district, the
academy of sciences and other units. They laid floral baskets and bouquets
at the statues of President Kim Il Sung standing at the respective units.
Colorful sports and amusement games took place there.
The senior party and state officials looked round production processes
of the industrial establishments and conversed with exemplary youth league
officials and members.
They asked them to always fulfil their duties as the young vanguard.
Evening galas of youth and students were held in different areas
yesterday to mark the Youth Day.

Joint memorial service in Seoul
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- A joint memorial service for the victims
of "Ukishima Maru," which was sunk by the Japanese imperialists while
sailing to the Pusan port carrying a large number of Korean draftees from
Japan right after the liberation of Korea, was held in Seoul on August 24,
according to MBC from Seoul. Present at the memorial service were more than
100 people, including old man Ji Hong Sok, 84, who narrowly escaped from
death, and bereaved families of the victims.
They said the Japanese authorities' decision on compensation to a few
survivors is an insult to over 5,000 victims who were buried at sea. They
called for a probe into the truth behind the case of "Ukishima Maru" and
sufficient compensation for the casualties.

Anecdotes about Kim Jong Il during his Russia visit
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- There are many anecdotes about leader Kim
Jong Il during his historic visit to the Russian Federation. Mysterious
natural phenomena took place in Hasan, Novosibirsk, Omsk and other places he
went. The rain which had lasted for a week or ten days stopped all of a
sudden and the sun began shining. On seeing these phenomena, Russians
praised him as a legendary great man capable of controlling nature.
When he visited the Omsk state science library named after Pushkin, the
guide said that Jo Ki Chon, a revolutionary poet of Korea, was "Mayakovski
of Korea".
On hearing this, Kim Jong Il explained that Jo was "Pushkin of Korea"
and made a proper appreciation of his exploits and talent. The officials of
the library were deeply admired by his warm love of the nation and highly
praised him as a genius of literature produced by mankind.
There is also an anecdote about his visit to the Mausoleum of Lenin to
pay homage to Lenin.
Ritbinov, first vice-editor-in-chief of the newspaper Patriot, said that
Kim Jong Il's visit to the mausoleum of Lenin signified that the leader of
the world cause of socialism declared victory of socialism on red square in
Moscow and indicated the way of winning victory of socialism to the
communists and the people of the world.
There is an anecdote about the leadership trait of Kim Jong Il who
always links whatever he sees or has in mind with the interests of the
Korean revolution and the people's living.
While conversing with the mayor of the city of St. Petersburg Kim Jong
Il raised a question about a turbine with its rotator having an angle of 45
degrees. This made Russians keenly realize what great energy and wisdom he
is devoting to the development of the power industry in Korea.
There are anecdotes about what a tight program he had counting every
second and minute during his six hour stay in Khabarovsk, how energetically
he worked in the entire period of travelling by train, always doing three or
four kinds of work at a time without a moment's rest and what a rich
knowledge he had of the world history and what an outstanding insight he had
into the present situation.

Anniversary of opening of diplomatic relations between DPRK and Cuba
observed
Pyongyang, August 29 (KCNA) -- Papers here today carry signed articles
on the occasion of the 41st anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic
relations between the DPRK and Cuba. An article of Rodong Sinmun says that
the establishment of diplomatic relations between the DPRK and Cuba was an
event of weighty significance in developing the friendly and cooperative
relations between the two peoples in all fields.
It recalled that over the past 40-odd years the peoples of the two
countries have closely supported and cooperated with each other in the joint
struggle to win victory in the socialist cause against imperialism.
The friendship between the DPRK and Cuba is growing stronger and
developing as the days go by in the spirit of the DPRK-Cuba treaty of
friendship and cooperation thanks to the deep concern of the leaders of the
two countries, the article says, and continues:
Since their victory in the revolution the Cuban people have victoriously
pushed ahead with the socialist cause of their own option, bravely
shattering the imperialists' vicious moves to invade, blockade and stifle
the country with a revolutionary principle and indomitable will under the
correct guidance of the Communist Party of Cuba led by Fidel Castro Ruz.
The Korean people will make positive efforts to further consolidate and
develop the relations of friendship, solidarity and cooperation between the
two peoples and always stand by the fraternal Cuban people in their struggle
to defend and advance the socialist cause.
Minju Joson notes that it is leader Kim Jong Il's intention and the
consistent stand of the government and people of the DPRK to invariably
develop the traditional DPRK-Cuba friendship in the new century, too.
