President Luong meets heads of State

President Tran Duc Luong of Vietnam had sideline meetings with US President
Bill Clinton, Venezuelian President Hugo
Chavez, Cuban President Fidel Castro, and Chilean President Ricardo Lagos
on September 6 while attending the ongoing
UN Millennium Summit in New York.

He also met with other heads of State and government and head delegates
from member countries of the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and African countries.

During the meetings, the two sides expressed their wish to further boost
bilateral co-operation in the interest of their
respective people, for regional and international peace, stability and
co-operation.

The Vietnamese and the Cuban leaders were of the same view to promote
co-ordination between member countries of the
G-77. Those countries, they said, should expand mutual assistance to
effectively carry out UN programmes and projects and
raise the UN's role in the 21st century and the third millennium. The two
leaders expressed their joy at the recent fruitful and
effective development of the Vietnam-Cuba traditional friendship and
co-operation.

At the meeting between President Luong and President Clinton, the two
parties discussed ways to boost bilateral
co-operation in the future.

The Vietnamese and Venezuelian leaders focused their discussion on how to
expand bilateral co-operation in the field of oil
and gas where they possess great potential.

President Luong and his Chilean counterpart compared notes on measures to
accelerate bilateral economic, trade and
investment ties. (VNA)
