. Fidel sends diploma of recognition to workers

FROM the day of its founding, Granma newspaper has remained faithful
to its initial purpose, to the political line of the Communist Party
of Cuba, the philosophies of Mart, Marx and Lenin, and Fidel's ideas.
It has been at the people's side during its struggle against
imperialist aggression, in the epic days of economic construction, the
country's institutionalization, the glorious chapters of
internationalism and the ongoing battle to improve its political
system, according to Jos Ramn Balaguer Cabrera of the Political
Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba, during the main ceremony
marking the newspaper's 35th anniversary.

The Jos Mart Memorial, in the heart of Revolution Square, was the
venue selected for the event, during which Rolando Alfonso Borges,
head of the Ideological Department of the Central Committee, presented
a diploma signed by Fidel Castro Ruz, first secretary of the Communist
Party of Cuba, in recognition of the collective of workers because it
has constituted, since the founding of Granma, the closest written
reflection of the politics and veracity of the Cuban Revolution for
millions of people in Cuba and the world.

Granma editor Frank Agero Gmez observed that 35 years of covering
daily events in Cuba and the world would seem to be paradoxically a
lot and a little; in terms of time, the figure signifies experience
or, in other words, maturity but also the vigor of youth, given that
every day signifies a new beginning.

He also noted that throughout those 35 years, the collective has
accompanied the leadership of the Revolution and the people in the
multiple battles whose premise is the defense of independence and
national sovereignty, and that has been done with an absolute
faithfulness to the truth and the most genuine interests of the nation
and the oppressed of the world.

For their many years of dedication, the National Trade Union of
Cultural Workers presented the Ral Gmez Garca distinction to a
group of journalists and workers from Granma daily and Granma
International. The medals were pinned on their recipients by Balaguer
and Jos Ramn Machado Ventura, likewise a member of the Political
Bureau.

In another part of his speech, Balaguer Cabrera emphasized that the
creation of Granma daily on October 3, 1965, is linked to three
historic events: the adoption of the name of the Communist Party of
Cuba, the constitution of its first Central Committee and the public
reading by Fidel of Ernesto Che Guevara's moving farewell letter.

Over the last few days, social and mass organizations have held
various activities in recognition of Granma workers. A photographic
exhibition of key moments in the life and activities of this daily was
recently opened in the offices of Granma daily.
