Vietnam hopes for closer ties with India Vietnamese leaders have expressed
their hope for further development of the co-operation between Vietnam and
India in economics, science-technology, trade and education. In separate
receptions to Indian Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh in Hanoi on November 7,
President Tran Duc Luong and Prime Minister Phan Van Khai highlighted the
fine development of the traditional relations between the two countries.
They praised the goodwill of the Indian government and people in supporting
and assisting the Vietnamese people in the past struggle for national
liberation and co-operating in the latter's national construction at
present. President Luong said the results of the two Foreign Ministers'
talks marked positive development in the implementation of two countries'
agreements. Talking with the Indian FM, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai
thanked the Indian government for granting Vietnam preferential credits to
help it build an information technology (IT) development centre. He said he
wished that India would help Vietnam train staff in IT and bio-technology.
He welcomed India's policy of independence, sovereignty, and non-alignment.
He also spoke highly of India's successes in economic reform and
science-technology. For his part, FM Singh renewed his country's
willingness to co-operate with and help Vietnam in IT, bio-technology,
human resource development, especially to raise two-way trade for mutual
benefits. President Luong and PM Khai asked Foreign Minister Singh to
convey their invitations to their Indian counterparts, R K Narayanan and
Atal Behari Vajpayee, respectively, to visit Vietnam. (VNA)

Vietnam supports agency for peaceful use of atomic energy Hoang Chi Trung,
counsellor of Vietnam's Permament Representation at the United Nations on
November 6 expressed Vietnam's support for the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA) in its control and monitoring of the implementation of
agreements on the safe use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes in member
countries in line with IAEA's safety standards. Speaking at a discussion on
IAEA's report within the framework of the 55th UN General Assembly, Mr
Trung, however, made it clear that these operations should not violate
national sovereignty and that the monitors should strictly abide by the
rules and principles for inspection operations as well as the agreements on
inspection signed between IAEA and member countries. Mr Trung made
Vietnam's pledge to boost co-operation with IAEA and other member countries
in bringing about the agency's goals. He expressed thanks to IAEA and some
developed member countries for their assistance to Vietnam in applying
atomic energy for development of health care and agriculture as well as
their help in ensuring safety. Mr Trung said he hoped IAEA would continue
to give financial and expertise assistance to developing countries in
sharing the use of atomic energy achievements for peaceful purposes. (VNA)
