The Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians and the
Organic Agriculture Group are hosting the Fourth International Encounter
Organic Agriculture in Havana, Cuba, on May 17, 18 and 19, 2001. The
purpose of the Encounter is to examine the advances of organic agriculture
in Cuba and its contributions to the transformation of rural areas.
As in previous conferences held in our country, the Encounter will be an
international forum for reflection and exchange of experiences about
ecological agriculture among participants from all over the world.
The IV Encounter, which will take place in the Havana Libre Hotel, will
consist of conferences, round tables, workshops and exhibits of posters,
and will include plenary sessions as well as presentations by individuals
commissioned to present their work. The diverse forums will encourage open
discussion and interaction among conference participants.
The primary themes that will be focused on during this Encounter are:
� The development of organic agriculture: Strategies and Concepts
� Integrated systems for sustainable agricultural management
� Integrated agroecological approaches to animal-crop integration
� Urban agriculture
� Sustainable agriculture: Economy and Society
� Information, training and agricultural extension
� Rural issues, agricultural diversification and ecotourism
� Certification and marketing of organic products
Numerous other events will be held in conjunction with the IV Encounter,
including the First International Symposium on Vermiculture and Composting,
and the meetings of IFOAM and its sister organization, IFOAM Latin America.
Participants are also invited to learn more about the actual application of
agroecological approaches to the production of food in Cuba by
participating in:
a) Field Days, which will take place from May 14-16 in the Province
and City of Havana; and
b) Study Tours, which will take place from May 10-16, which will
include focused trips to either the Occidental, Central, or Oriental de
Cuba Provices
After the conclusion of the Encounter, participants can choose to take any
of the following specialized courses:
a) IV International Course on Organic Agriculture
b) Course on Marketing Organic Products
c) International Course on Sustainable Management and Use of Soils
d) International Course on the Production and Application of
Biological Controls in Organic Agriculture
e) International Course on the Biological Management of Pests in urban
gardens
Presentations of Work
Participants interested in presenting their own work at the Encounter
should submit summaries of their presentations consisting of no more than
500 words, and detailing the title of the presentation, author(s),
institution(s), methodology, results and conclusions, as well as address,
telephone number, fax number and e-mail address of the author(s).
The deadline for submission of entries is December 25, 2000. Selection and
format of the presentation will be decided by the Technical Committee of
the IV Encounter, and participants selected will be notified starting
February 25, 2001. Final versions of presentations must be mailed prior to
April 15, 2001, and must be no more than six pages (including 1-2 tables or
graphs that support the information presented), written in Microsoft Word,
using Times New Roman Font, single spaced, 12 point size, with document
margins of 2.5cm. An area of 1 by 2 meters will be available to each
presenter for posters and displays.
The official language of the IV Encounter on Organic Agriculture is Spanish.
Fees
Cuban delegates: 150 Cuban Pesos
Foreign delegates: $150 (U.S.)
Fees cover participation in the Encounter; accreditation; a welcome drink,
all lunches, and dinner on the last day.
Simultaneous Spanish-English translation is available for the Plenary
Sessions of the Encounter by previous arrangement with the Organizing
Committee.

Description of the Conference Facilities
The Havana Libre Hotel has conference facilities that can hold upwards of
2000 people, 574 rooms, a large variety of restaurants and sotres that
allow conference participants to enjoy themselves at the same time as they
are working. The Hotel is located in the center of Havana, at L Street and
23 Street, in the Vedado neighborhood.
