>FIRST DOCTOR MEDICAL AIRLIFT TO CUBA
>
>Thanksgiving Day, November 23, will mark a historic event in U.S.-Cuba
>relations. For the first time, U.S. medical doctors will lawfully fly to
>Cuba using their private aircraft loaded with over $1 million in medical
>donations. These flights will carry medicines, state-of-the-art surgical
>instruments and computers for Cuba's health system. The doctors are carrying
>out this humanitarian mission because the United States Government blocks
>the sale of many critical medicines desperately needed by the Cuban people
>and it also seriously impedes the shipment of medical donations.
>
>November 23 also marks another historical event. It is the first-year
>anniversary that the little Cuban boy Elian was rescued from the Florida
>Straits.
>
>A news conference will be held at 12 noon at Miami International Airport on
>Wednesday, November 22 at the address below. One of the pilots, Dr. Anthony
>Kirkpatrick, will be available to answer questions about his new
>organization called CUBA-USA Medical Airlift. There are two private aircraft
>licensed by the United States Government to make multiple round trips, with
>the first flight scheduled to arrive in Havana at 12 noon on Thanksgiving
>Day.
>
>The medicines and surgical instruments will be distributed by the Pan
>American Health Organization (PAHO). A physician representing PAHO for Latin
>America will be flying with the doctors to Havana. Dr. Jose Teruel is an
>expert on Cuba's health care system.
