Localities celebrate new millennium
Many cultural activities were organised in localities nationwide to mark the
spanning time of the new century and the new millennium.
Quang Nam central province launched a number of festivities a the provincial
cultural centre on December 31.
People in Buon Ma Thuot city, Dak Lak central highland province, enjoyed the
performances of gongs, drums and dances to welcome the new year.
Provinces such as Tien Giang, Quang Ninh, Kien Giang, Binh Duong, Quang Tri,
Nam Dinh, Phu Yen, Quang Ngai, Lam Dong, Dong Nai and others also held
special art performances to welcome the new century.
National day greetings to Cuban leaders
Vietnam's leaders have extended greetings to the first secretary of the
Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee and president of both the State
Council and the Council of Ministers of Cuba, Fidel Castro Ruz, for Cuba's
42nd National Day, January 1.
The greetings of December 31 were signed by General Secretary of the
Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Le Kha Phieu, State President
Tran Duc Luong and Prime Minister Phan Van Khai.
National Assembly Chairman Nong Duc Manh and Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien
sent their greetings to President of the National Assembly of the People's
Power Ricardo Alarcon De Quesada and Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque of

Goods ready for Tet in Hanoi
The Hanoi General Goods Company has prepared VND 13 billion worth of goods
to meet the consumers� demand in Hanoi during the Lunar New Year.
The goods include sugar, glutamate, cooking oil, confectionery, jam, wine,
beers, cigarettes, tea and coffee.
All these goods are of high quality and domestically produced. The goods�
prices are stable. Besides its 60 retail shops in all the districts of the
city�s urban areas, the company has carried out the wholesale to districts
in the suburban areas.
Phu Quoc prison's restoration nearly completed
Construction was started on July 27, 1997 to restore the historic site of
Phu Quoc Prison. And now the project has been basically completed and is
expected to be inaugurated on April 30 this year, the Liberation Day of the
South.The prison is located in an area of five kilometres with the total
investment capital of about VND 5.3 billion from the local budget. The
project's main items are the restoration of separate detention area B2,
prisoners' dining rooms, jails, the tunnel to escape from the prison,
barded-wire fence, sentry box and the construction of a displaying room, a
martyrs' memorial, a path from the main road to the memorial site and the
Coconut Tree prison's memorial stele.
Independence Orders presented in Khanh Hoa
The Khanh Hoa province's authorities have presented 56 Independence Order
and 122 badges of 40-year and 50-year Party membership to senior
revolutionaries.
Of which, there are an Independence Order, First Class, posthumously awarded
to war martyr To Van On, former committee secretary of Khanh Hoa province in
the war time, eleven Independence Orders, second class, and 44 Orders, Third
Class.To date, eight people in Khanh Hoa have been bestowed with
Independence Orders, First Class, 163 others with Independence Orders,
Second Class and 201 with Independence Orders, Third Class.
