Vietnam to promote regional action plans at AIPO helm
National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An reaffirmed that the goal of ASEAN
Inter - Parliamentary Organisation (AIPO) is to promote co-operation and
understanding between member parliaments and assist diplomatic and
co-operative activities of ASEAN governments.
Mr An was speaking while chairing the first meeting of the AIPO National
Steering Committee and Organisation Committee held in Hanoi on December 31,
2001 to prepare for the General Assembly.
Vietnam's stewardship of the AIPO has created more opportunities for it to
advance implementation of commitments made under the Hanoi Plan of Action
and Hanoi Declaration, he stressed.
It will also help the NA bring major orientations to the agenda for the 23rd
AIPO General Assembly that will be held in Hanoi this September, he said.
Hosting the 23rd General Assembly gives the NA a good chance to implement
its lofty responsibilities towards the AIPO while promoting friendly
relations, bilateral and multi-lateral co-operation with other parliaments
of ASEAN, its dialogue partners and other nations, he said.
He asked members of the National Steering Committee and Organisation
Committee and other relevant agencies to carefully plan and co-ordinate with
each other in implementing their assigned tasks, particularly the
preparations for an AIPO conference on preventing drug abuse to be held by
the end of this month.
AIPO General Secretary Vu Mao, who is head of the NA's External Relations
Commission, told the meeting of work done over the four months since Vietnam
took over AIPO presidency last September from Thailand.
He also outlined the work that remained to be done in preparing for coming
events and tasks to be completed in the future. (VNA)
