From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Since the demonstrations that closed down the meetings of the World Trade Organisation in Seattle in November 1999, a new movement has taken shape that has taken on the free market consensus of our leaders, and brought the term 'anti-capitalist' into common use. Last year alone saw mass anti-capitalist protests in Washington, Melbourne, Prague, Seoul, and Nice as well as scores of demonstrations against IMF and World Bank policies in the South. Here in the UK despite the chaos and death of rail privatisation, schools being reduced to four day weeks because of lack of teachers, hospitals being privatised through PFI schemes, the destruction of manufacturing industry by large multinational companies like GM and Ford, and the dismantling of our welfare state, the forthcoming election will see both main political parties continuing to push a pro- market agenda. The new wave of protests have been effective in calling into question these pro-market ideas, that put profit before people. But we urgently need to connect the global struggles to the local ones. The 'Globalise Resistance' conference aims to make those connections by bringing together a diverse range of groups and activists to discuss through a series of workshops and debates, how we can build just such a movement in the UK. Already we have speakers who include Kevin Danaher one of the key organisers of Seattle, George Monbiot the campaigning journalist, Chris Harman the editor of Socialist Worker and Clare Joy of the World Development Movement. We hope that you will join us, if you are interested in coming, getting leaflets or would like to get involved please give us a call.
