President sends gifts to millennium's babies
State President Tran Duc Luong sent gifts to babies who were born on the
first minutes of the new century, new millennium.
He also sent his best wishes of a new year of happiness and prosperity and
congratulations to the babies¹ parents. He expressed his wish that the
children, the future masters of the country, will be well taken care of by
their parents, families, local Party Committee and authorities and social
organisations.
Entrusted by President Tran Duc Luong, Chairman of the Hanoi People¹s
Committee Hoang Van Nghien presented gifts including a savings book worth
VND two million and the president¹s letter to the family of baby Tran Quang
Long in Ngoc Thuy village, Gia Lam district.

National Spring Press Festival opens today
The National Spring Press Festival is opened today at the Giang Vo Centre
for Fairs and Exhibitions in Hanoi.
More than 500 press publications from media agencies nationwide are being
displayed on an area of 1,200 square metres. Apart from a large stand
exhibiting all kinds of press publications by the Ministry of Culture and
Information, 20 units from central sectors and Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and
Haiphong city have their own stands.
A Jury comprising representatives from the Party Commission for Ideology and
Culture, the Ministry of Culture and Information, the Vietnam Journalists'
Association and several exemplary journalists and painters was set up to
select and award newspapers and magazines with fine lay-out.
During the closing ceremony of the Spring Press Festival, which will fall on
January 18, the Vietnam Journalists' Association will present awards to
authors and works that have won National Press Prize in 2000. The City Party
Committee, the People's Council, the People's Committee and Journalists'
Association of Ho Chi Minh City will give awards to writers with outstanding
articles on Ho Chi Minh City issued on their Spring newspapers. In addition,
the National Spring Press Festival's organising board will also present
Certificates of Commendation and awards to press agencies with fine
presentation stands and fine lay-out Spring newspapers.

Vietnam, Laos enhance ideological co-operation
Vietnam and Laos signed a Memorandum of Understanding on ideological and
cultural co-operation in 2001 in Hanoi.
The signatories were the head of the Vietnam's Party Commission for Ideology
and Culture, Nguyen Huu Tho, and the head of the Laos' Commission for
Propaganda and Ideological Education and Politburo member, Osakan
Thammatheva, who paid a working visit to Vietnam from January 7 to 14 at the
invitation of the Vietnamese Party Commission for Ideology and Culture.
Earlier, the Lao delegation was received by Party General Secretary Le Kha
Phieu who spoke highly of the ideological and cultural co-operation between
the two countries, contributing to stabilising the political and ideological
situation, thus making Laos and Vietnam steadily enter a period of
industrialisation and modernisation. This, General Secretary Phieu said,
also helped tighten the special ties between the two Parties and peoples.
The Lao delegation had a working session with the Vietnam's Party Commission
for Ideology and Culture. The two delegations evaluated the result of their
co-operation on ideology and culture in 2000 and discussed orientations for
continued co-operation on issues of mutual concern.
While its stay in Vietnam, the Lao delegation paid a tribute to late
President Ho Chi Minh at his Mausoleum, visited the Garment Company No 10,
the Hau River Farm, the Bien Hoa Industrial Zone, the Museum of Ethnology
and had working visits to the southern provinces of Can Tho, Vinh Long, Dong
Nai and Ho Chi Minh City.

Philippines chief of general staff wraps up visitGeneral AT Reyes, chief of
General Staff of the Philippines Army left Ho Chi Minh City on January 14,
ending his official visit to Vietnam.
During the visit, General Reyes paid courtesy visits to Deputy Prime
Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Defence Minister Pham Van Tra, and exchanged views
with Lieutenant General Le Van Dung, deputy defence minister and chief of
General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army.
General Reyes and his delegation paid floral tributes to the Martyrs'
Monument in Hanoi and to President Ho Chi Minh at his Mausoleum and visited
President Ho's house and office.
The delegation also visited the Army Museum, the Van Mieu (Temple of
Literature) in Hanoi, Command of the Military Zone 7, the Infantry Officer
College No 1, the Thong Nhat palace and the Cu Chi underground tunnels in

British-funded rural road project underwayConstruction of a VND 14 billion
rural road project started in central coastal Ninh Thuan province on January
13 with funding from World Bank loans and British non-refundable aid.
The project, consisting of seven road sections, has a combined length of 55
kilometres with two bridges totalling 110 metres.
It is the first of a series of rural and mountain road projects proposed for
Ninh Thuan province as part of its programme to ensure all-year-round
vehicle accessibility between communes. (VNA)
