Urgent Appeal for Action
Ambulances Held at Ashdod Port

January 16, 2001

Twenty-one ambulances have been held at the Israeli port of Ashdod
since October. These ambulances have been purchased for Palestinian
health and humanitarian organizations, yet the Israeli authorities
are refusing to release them.

It is of vital importance that these ambulances be released to the
various organizations who will use them to transport sick and injured
Palestinians to hospitals. The health care system of Palestine is
eroding due to continued attacks on Palestinian civilians and the
tight closures of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and these ambulances
are desperately needed. The purposeful negligence of the Israeli
authorities in refusing to release these ambulances constitutes a
serious human rights violation.

The UPMRC is launching a campaign to pressure the Ministry of Defense
to release these ambulances to the organizations who will use them.
We ask the international community to join us in our efforts. Please
send faxes and emails demanding the immediate release of these
ambulances to:

Ephraim Sneh
Deputy Minister of Defense
Fax: +972-3-697-6990
