NATO Military Maneuvers to be Held in Georgia in June

TBILISI, Jan 23, 2001 -- (Agence France Presse)
Military maneuvers involving naval, land and air
forces from 10 NATO countries and six partner states
will be held in Georgia in June this year, a NATO
Partnership for Peace coordination spokesman told AFP
Tuesday.

A delegation of NATO officials examined the military
airport in Seneki and the area near the town of Poti
in western Georgia where the maneuvers would take
place, the spokesman said.

The maneuvers, called "Cooperative Partner 2001",
involve 2,000 troops, 40 vessels and 15 planes and
helicopters and are designed to help participating
countries practice coordinating their forces in
humanitarian operations, the spokesman said.

The NATO officials and their counterparts from
Georgia's general staff discussed the details of the
maneuvers, setting up multinational headquarters, and
other preparations.

The exercise is part of NATO's Partnership for Peace
program, launched in 1994, which is aimed at
developing military cooperation with NATO non-members,
in particular the former communist states of the
Warsaw Pact.

Cooperative Partner 2001 brings together 10 members of
the alliance -- United States, Britain, France,
Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Greece
and Turkey -- and six partnership countries, Sweden,
Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

Russia would not participate in the maneuvers, the
spokesman said. ((c) 2001 Agence France Presse)
