Fidel Castro Arrives in Syria
Damascus, May 15 (AIN)--President Fidel Castro, arrived Tuesday afternoon in
the capital of the Arab Republic of Syria, the latest stop on his foreign
trip, at the invitation of President Bashar Hafez Al Assad.
President Al Assad greeting Fidel as he emerged from the Cubana airplane.
Also among the welcoming party were Farouk El Sharee, Syria's Foreign
Affairs Minister and Communications Minister Radwan Martini. After a brief
conversation at the airport, President Al Assad accompanied the Cuban
president to the Peoples's Palace located on the heights just outside
Damascus, from which most of the capital can be seen.
After an official welcoming ceremony, the heads of state held a private
meeting with their delegations, including the Syrian Vice-President Mohammad
Zuhalr Macharka, Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa Miro, Chancellor El Sharee
and the People�s Assembly President, Abdelqader Qaddura. Traveling with
Fidel Castro are Felipe P�rez Roque, Foreign Affairs Minister, Jos� M. Miyar
Barruecos, Secretary of the State Council, Carlos M. Valenciaga D�az, member
of the State Council, Orlando Lancis Su�rez, Cuban ambassador to Syria,
Osvaldo Mart�nez Mart�nez, President of Economic Affairs of the National
Assembly and Hassan P�rez Casanova, President of the Federation of Cuban
University Students.
The schedule for the rest of the day included discussions between the two
delegations, and an official dinner this evening hosted by President Al
Assad.
This visit, Fidel Castro's first to Syria, follows previous stops in
Algeria, Iran, Malaysia, and Qatar on his tour of the Middle East and Asia.
