Hungary Breaks up Anti-NATO Rally Before Meeting

BUDAPEST, May 29, 2001 -- (Reuters) Hungarian police
broke up an anti-NATO rally in Budapest on Monday
ahead of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers scheduled
for Tuesday and Wednesday, Hungarian television
reported.

The rally of up to 40 people on downtown Budapest's
Chain Bridge ended peacefully, after police told
demonstrators to leave because the rally had not been
pre-arranged with the authorities beforehand,
television channel RTL Klub said.

The police removed a large banner from the bridge hung
there by the organizers, the anti-militarist group
Alba Kor, which showed NATO's symbol and called it a
"Death Star".

Hungarian authorities have said they were prepared to
prevent any extremist groups from disrupting the
meeting.

Another local anti-militarist group, the Humanist
Movement, has announced that it plans to hold a rally
on Tuesday to protest against NATO and U.S. foreign
policy, but police said violence was not expected.
