Vice president praises friendship with Iraq
Vice President Nguyen Thi Binh receives Iraqi Trade Minister Dr Mohammed
Mehdi.
Vice President Nguyen Thi Binh highly praised the good results of the
co-operative and friendly relations between Vietnam and Iraq in the recent
past, particularly the exchange of oil for food.
She was speaking at a reception on June 13 of the visiting Iraqi Trade
Minister Dr Mohammed Mehdi, who is also Head of the Iraqi section of the
Vietnam-Iraq Inter-governmental Commission.
Iraqi Trade Minister Dr. Mohammed Mehdi has been here to attend the 15th
session of the Vietnam-Iraq Inter-governmental Commission held in Hanoi from
June 10-15.
Ms Binh said she hoped that the traditional friendship between the two
countries would be further expanded in the coming period. She expressed her
sympathy with the Iraqi people for the difficulties they are facing.
Iraqi Trade Minister Mohammed Mehdi thanked the Vietnamese people for their
support and assistance to the Iraqi people over recent years. He said Iraq
places great importance on continuing to develop its friendship with
Vietnam. (VNA)

Vietnam, China meet on border demarcation
The third meeting of the joint Vietnam-China Committee for Borderline
Demarcation was held in Beijing, China, from May 22-June 7.
The meeting took place in an atmosphere of friendship and mutual
understanding.
During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views and reached positive
results in compiling technical documents for borderline demarcation and the
setting up of landmarks. They signed the minutes of the meeting and agreed
to hold a meeting of the joint committee's presidents in Vietnam.
Deputy foreign minister and head of the Chinese government delegation to the
meeting, Wang Yi, received members of the joint committee.
Vietnam's ambassador to China, Bui Hong Phuc, attended the reception. (VNA)

Vietnam joins with Cambodia, Laos in drug control
The Vietnamese government and people are determined to strengthen
co-operation in drug control with the governments and people of Cambodia,
Laos, and other regional countries.
So said deputy public security minister, Major General Le The Tiem, at a
meeting to discuss measures to strengthen co-operation in drug control and
social vices prevention between Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos held in Phnom
Penh, capital of Cambodia, on June 13-14.
Addressing the meeting on June 13, Deputy Minister Le The Tiem, head of the
Vietnamese delegation to the meeting, said the Vietnamese government made
great efforts in implementing the reached agreements by applying drastic
measures in drug control.
Earlier, bilateral meetings were organised on June 12 between delegations of
Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
At these meetings, representatives of the three countries informed one
another of the drug control efforts in their respective countries and
reviewed bilateral co-operation in the recent past.
The participants noted that increasing drug abuse is seriously threatening
the security and development of various countries, particularly south-east
Asian countries. They affirmed the need to strengthen co-operation in drug
control between Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
At the meeting, representatives of the three countries issued a joint
statement pointing to necessary measures for drug control and strengthen
co-operation, and mutual help. They stressed the need to win more support
from other countries and the international community in drug control.
The participants pledged to actively take part in a sub-regional
co-operation plan as well as the ASEAN Plan of Action. They also agreed to
convene the next annual meeting of the three countries' drug control
agencies in Vientiane, Laos. (VNA)

Vietnam set to ratify trade agreement with US
Vietnam always wants the Vietnam-US bilateral trade agreement (BTA) to be
ratified soon and to come into effect as it will benefit both nations, said
the Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Phan Thuy Thanh yesterday, June 13.
Ms Thanh further said that the signing of the BTA was the result of joint
efforts by both Vietnam and the US, meeting both countries' interests.
In response to the Hanoi-based AFP correspondent's question as to whether or
not the Vietnamese National Assembly will ratify the BTA at its on-going
session, Ms Thanh said that Vietnam is the currently making the necessary
preparations to ratify the BTA if the US Congress approves the agreement in
July.
She added that Vietnam's Trade Ministry has reported to the NA Standing
Committee, NA deputies and other concerned NA Committees on the agreement.
In that spirit, Vietnam will soon consider ratifying the BTA, Ms Thanh said.
