U.S. NAVY OUT OF VIEQUES & ALL OF PUERTO RICO!

On July 14, 2001, the New York Times reported that President George W. Bush
announced that the Navy would end military maneuvers in Vieques Puerto Rico,
sometime by the year 2003. The President finally acknowledged that "harm has
been done" to the people of Vieques as a result of this bombardments,
illegal chemical weapons and stated, " Secondly, these are our friends and
neighbors and they don't want us there."

We are glad that the President and the Navy have finally got the message
that the U.S. military and its contamination of Vieques and its people are
not wanted. This very basic acknowledgment of the suffering of the people
of Vieques is long overdue. The Bush statement reflects the impact the
struggle
in Vieques has had on public opinion on the world scale, this we claim a
victory. But this admission was not followed by the Navy's immediate >
withdrawal from Vieques. It was met with the Navy saying they would leave n
two years. It is not good enough that the Pentagon is trying to get out of
the public relations nightmare that Vieques has become. The Bush
administration is also trying to avoid further exposure of Puerto Rico's
Colonial relationship to the U.S., which the Vieques struggle has revealed.

The struggle is far from over!

The people of Vieques cannot wait until 2003! Our movement here in NYC that
has pressured the Navy and the President will not wait.

The Vieques Support Campaign was formed after the April 19, 1999 target
practice "accident" that claimed the life of David Sanes Rodrigues and
injured four others. Every day since, another person is afflicted with
cancer on the island Vieques or dying in Palestine, Yugoslavia, Iraq and
countless other countries due to military operations practiced on Vieques.

To ask the people of Vieques to wait two years is not just an insult but a
crime, and it has become apparent to people around the world, that U.S.
Navy's actions have been nothing less than criminal.

The Demands of the people of Vieques are:

             1-Decontamination
             2-Demilitarization
             3-Development
             4-Devolution (return of the land)!

Bush's hypocritical overtures don't meet these demands!

 Not one more bomb!
U.S. Navy Out of Vieques NOW!
U.S. Imperialism Out of Puerto Rico!
