Subject: [downwithcapitalism] Gothenburg, Saturday - thousands march

BBC. Saturday, 16 June, 2001, 12:26 GMT 13:26 UK. Thousands march on EU
summit. Excerpts.

Thousands of protesters have massed for another demonstration in
Gothenburg on the final day of the European Union summit in the Swedish
city.

Organisers expected up to 25,000 people to take part in Saturday's
march, whose route has been altered to avoid the battered city centre.

Protesters assembled on Saturday waving anti-EU and anti-globalisation
banners and chanting slogans such as "Tax the rich not the poor".

The BBC's Rob Broomby says the atmosphere in the city remains tense and
a number of [so-called] anarchists are mingling with the [so-called]
good-natured campaigners, threatening a repeat of Friday's violence.

The city's police have so far adopted a low profile, following a meeting
with protest leaders to try to defuse the tension caused by the shooting
incident on Friday night.

The summit venue itself remains completely sealed off by steel fences
and barricades.
