Jiang's Speech: Guide to China's Reunification The important speech delivered by Jiang Zemin, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) at a grand ceremony Sunday marking the CPC's 80th anniversary, is of far-reaching significance and a guide to the realization of the reunification of the motherland as early as possible. That view was aired by senior officials with the Taiwan Affairs Office of the CPC Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, the highest governing body in China, at a meeting Tuesday afternoon. The participants pledged to carefully study the guidelines of Jiang's speech, work in a down-to-earth manner and make greater contributions to the complete reunification of China. Chen Yunlin, head of both offices, said that Jiang's speech fully expressed the strong aspiration and firm determination of the whole Party and all Chinese people toward safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a complete reunification of the country. Workers of both offices said they will make due contributions to the accomplishment of the great reunification cause as early as possible by implementing the Party and government's policies on Taiwan, uniting compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, and people of Chinese origin now residing overseas, and fighting against all plots intended to separate China. Speech Applauded by Academic Circle Experts in China's academic circle voiced strong support to President Jiang Zemin's "July 1st" speech, in the belief that its spirit accords with the development rule of history and reflects the development trend of the times. The experts are of the view that the speech, delivered at a grand gathering marking the 80th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Sunday by Jiang, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, is a programmatic document of great historic significance that has unveiled a new chapter in the development process of Marxism. Professor Xue Hanwei with Beijing University said that all great Marxists have consistently advocated the maintenance and development of Marxism and made great contributions to this end. Xue said he believes that Jiang's speech has further enriched and developed Marxism by systematically summing up the past 80-year history of the CPC, explicitly expounding on the "Three Represent's," emphasizing the necessity of Party building, and outlining the historical tasks and targets of the CPC in the new century. Professor Li Binxiong of Wuhan University said that the "Three Represent's" have answered the historical question of to what direction and in what way we should build the CPC. This is not only a continuation of but a new contribution to Marxism. Professor Pang Yuanzheng with the Party School of the CPC Central Committee said he believes that Jiang's speech has clarified the relationship between social practice and theoretical innovation. Social practice is a living source of theoretical development and in the meantime, continuous theoretical development can serve as a guide to social practice, he said. **** Social Scientists Discuss Jiang's Speech Scholars from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) convened Wednesday to discuss the speech made by Jiang Zemin, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, at a grand gathering Sunday marking the 80th founding anniversary of the CPC. Li Shenming, vice president of the CASS, said Jiang's speech is a creative development of Marxism, Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory and also a great contribution to Marxism. Li said he hopes that social scientists thoroughly study Jiang' s speech and explore new ways in social scientific research. They vowed to make new contributions to further the development and prosperity of social sciences. **** China's Stance on Japanese Textbook Issue Unchanged: FM Spokeswoman China has not changed its stance on the Japanese textbook issue, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said Tuesday. At a press conference, Zhang said that although some parts of Japanese historical textbook were revised, the part that China demanded to change is not revised. Thus China's stance toward the issue remain unchanged. Zhang made the remark in answering a question about a report Monday on revisions to ancient part of Japan's historical textbook and Japanese government's praise of the revisions. Zhang said the revised textbook approved by the Japanese government whitewashed Japanese history of aggression, which aroused indignation of the Asian countries including China. "The textbook still contains numerous history-distorting facts, despite the revisions," Zhang said. She said the Chinese side has pointed out explicitly the falsehoods in the textbook through diplomatic channels, demanding that the Japanese correct the mistakes to avert the consequent negative impact. She said that she hoped that Japan would give serious consideration to the solemn stand and justifiable demand of China and other Asian countries, and commit itself to telling the truth about its history. **** Serbian Parties Demand Release of Milosevic Major parties in the Serbian Republic of Yugoslavia demanded strongly Tuesday that the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague immediately release former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic. Milosevic's Socialist Party of Serbia said in a public announcement that The Hague tribunal had started to try Milosevic in an attempt to whitewash NATO's crimes against humanity and peace in Yugoslavia instead of bringing justice to the case. Chairman of the Serbian Radical Party Vojislav Seselj said in a statement that he was deeply impressed by the calm and dignity of Milosevic at the court of The Hague. He hoped Milosevic would be persistent so as to safeguard the interests of the Serbs and unveil those behind the court which acts as "a tool of NATO." Milosevic, who made his first public appearance at the UN tribunal in The Hague Tuesday, faced his prosecutors alone and refused to consider legal representation at the court. He looked calm and steadfast, saying that the tribunal was "false" and "illegal." Milosevic's lawyer in Yugoslavia, Toma Fila, Tuesday told the Yugoslav news agency Tanjug that he personally believed that it might be better for Milosevic to find a defense lawyer who is an expert of international law. Fila predicted that the trial of Milosevic could last three to five years, and he hoped that Milosevic would reconsider the issue of finding a lawyer for himself. Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic said to the press at the government building that the Serbian government had finished its job after handing Milosevic over to the U.N. court. As to how Milosevic should behave, it was the business of his own, said Djindjic. **** Mongolian President Meets Chinese Foregn Minister Mongolia <http://www.peopledaily.com.cn/english/data/mongolia.html> n President Nachagyn Bagabandy said Wednesday in Ulan Bator that Mongolia adheres to the principle of developing long-term good neighborly ties with China based on mutual benefit and equal footing. Readers voice: China is the only country in the world at the moment which stands up to the Rambo-methods of the USA. I am proud of China and China should remain firm towards the USA. No US-troops in Asia and Europe! The second World War is over long ago! The USA should learn geography first! They can spy along their own coast but not in foreign areas. This is a blunt agression against China! I enjoy reading your newspaper in Englisch and in Chinese! ---- from Erwin Vollmann, Austria _________________________________________________ KOMINFORM P.O.
