Paramilitaries burn 56 homes
----------------------------
BOGOTA -- At least 56 homes in a small northern Colombian village within
the potential ELN guerrillas' neutral zone were burned by alleged rightist
paramilitaries over the weekend in an incursion that displaced hundreds of
area residents, civic leaders and Colombian authorities said Sunday.
The incursion was made by an armed force into El Paraiso, a small village
near San Pablo in the northern Bolivar province, some 800 kilometers (480
miles) north of Bogota.
The area is considered to be within the proposed neutral zone that may at
some point be set aside for the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrillas.
Armed men, identified as members of the United Self-Defense Forces of
Colombia (AUC), the country's main paramilitary organization, forced
residents from their homes, which they then burned.
The ELN is the second-largest guerrilla group in the country, after the
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). The ELN broke off
negotiations with the government last April 19 allegedly because of
frequent attacks by paramilitaries in the proposed neutral zone.
Hundreds of El Paraiso residents fled to San Pablo and a regional official
said that in the last two months the AUC has burned some 80 homes and
forced numerous inhabitants of the area to flee.
