Perez Roque highlights will to strengthen Cuba-Peru relations

Havana--Cuban Foreign Affairs Minister Felipe Perez Roque highlighted in
Havana the common will of Cuba and Peru of continuing strengthening
relations based on mutual respect. When returning to Cuba after
participating at Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo's inauguration, Perez
Roque affirmed that the meeting with the South American President elect
served to make votes for the widening of relations and the increase of
collaboration in diverse sectors. He added that in a meeting with his
Peruvian counterpart Diego Garcia, he gave thanks for Peru's gesture of not
joining the anti Cuban campaign at the Human Rights Commission in April,
2000, when a resolution condemning Cuba on alleged human rights violations
was presented at U.S. request.

Cuban Communist Party delegation travels to South AFrica

Havana--Cuban Communist Party (PCC) Central Committee Politburo member Pedro
Saez travelled to South Africa to participate in activities on the 80th
anniversary of the South African Communist Party. Saez, who is also Havana's
province PCC first secretary, said before leaving Jose Marti's International
Airport that he fulfills an invitation by South AFrican Communist Party
general secretary Blade Nzimande, who visited Cuba this year. We will
develop a wide work program until August 10, including meetings with South
African party organizations, National African Congress and government
leaders, he said.

2nd Cuba-U.S. Youth Meeting takes place

Havana--A group of 180 young people from various U.S. cities exchanged
opinions with leaders from Cuban political and student organizations in the
2nd meeting of this type here promoted. The U.S. delegates, most of them
university students, were interested in the structure and functioning of
Cuban youth organizations as well as in the mechanism to elect their leaders
and the role of them in the leadership of their members. They also wanted to
know details of the programs included in the Battle of Ideas, term described
by one delegate as a "very big thing" of which they have known very
recently.

Italian cruise ship to have main dock in Cuba

Havana--Beginning in December Mistral and Bolero cruise ships from the
Italian Festival Cruises company, number 1 enterprise in Europe in this type
of tourism, will have its main dock in Cuba from December on. This was
announced by Opciones economic weekly, which explains that both ships will
be anchored in Havana's port from where they will begin one week tours on
the Caribbean after docking in five Cuba ports. Last week, Umberto Ferraro,
president of the Italian holding, signed an agreement protocol with
representatives of the Cuban Transport, Tourism and Basic Industry
Ministries to guarantee these operations.

Cuba and Mexico agree on juridical basis for promoting investments

Havana--Mexican and Cuban governments established the juridical basis of an
agreement to promote and protect each other investments. The press informed
here that the agreement will be implemented on October 2001. The Opciones
economic weekly informed that the bases were introduced in a seminar that
both parties held at Cuba's National Hotel, where Mexican Ambassador Ricardo
Pascoe Pierce called the document of historical significance.  The diplomat
assured that the goal of the text is to encourage the economic, financial,
industrial and trade exchange between both countries and highlighted that
President Vicente Fox has repeated the importance of a new relation that is
emerging between Mexico and Cuba.

Cuba champion at the Pan-American men's weightlifting

Santo Domingo--Cuba unequivocally won the men's 1st Pan-American
Weightlifting Championship, obtaining 17 gold, four silver and two bronze
medals. Former Juvenile team member Roberto Martinez (105 kg) won one silver
and two bronze medals. The Cuban team did not bring any athlete over 105 kg.
