by Walter Lippmann Gambia President Commends Cuban Government President Jammeh Commends Government of Cuba Gambia Radio & TV News (Banjul) July 27, 2001 Posted to the web July 30, 2001 By Sabel Jagne Banjul The President, Alhaji Yahya Jammeh yesterday received at State House, the 148 newly assigned Cuban Medical team. The team which comprises gynacolognists, physicians, dentists, surgeons and Professors amongst others arrived in the Gambia a few days ago. They will be deployed to hospitals and other health facilities throughout the country. In welcoming them, President Jammeh reiterated his government's commitment to always stand by Cuba. He said the Gambia will continue to denounce the unjustiable economic sanction imposed against Cuba and make sure that it is lifted. He also used the occasion to commend President Fidel Castro and the people of Cuba for the invaluable services they have been rendering to the Gambian people. He also noted that for the past seven years Cuba has been very supportive to the Gambia people particularly in the health sector. President Jammeh therefore expressed optisimism that the new team will continue the good work which their predecessors have already started. Speaking earlier, the secretary of state for health Yankuba Gassama said the services rendered by the Cuban doctors have helped to improve the country's health indicators. He said with the presence of the Cuban team, infant mortality has dropped from 121 to 90 per thousand live birth.
