Slovenia Denies Troops Training With British Units to
Capture Karadzic
Aug 14, 2001 -- (BBC Monitoring) Text of report in
English by Slovene news agency STA.
Ljubljana, 14 August: The Slovene Ministry of Defense
[MoD] has denied the Montenegrin media reports about
special units of the Slovene Armed Forces being
trained together with Great Britain's special units in
the southeast of Slovenia in a bid to arrest Radovan
Karadzic, former political leader of the Bosnian
Serbs.
According to MoD spokesperson Miriam Mozgan, the 1st
Special Brigade of the Slovene Armed Forces and its
British counterparts are currently on a military
training in the area of Cerklje ob Krki, some 80
kilometers southeast of Ljubljana, but not as part of
preparations to arrest Karadzic.
The Slovene Armed Forces special brigade and members
of the British armed forces are being trained in
Slovenia from 6 to 28 August as part of a routine
military cooperation set down in a bilateral
agreement, Mateja Vadnjal, a spokesperson of the
special brigade, told STA on Tuesday [14 August].
According to Vadnjal, a tactical military exercise is
under way near the town of Cerklje under the
commandership of the British troops. Its aim is to
train troops for special tasks. Vadnjal added that
this is not the first cooperation of its kind in which
the Slovene Armed Forces are involved.
