Eli Amar sustained wounds in the left eye when bullets fired from the opposite Palestinian village Beit Jala shattered the windshield of his car, the report said. Palestinian gunmen began shooting at Gilo early Tuesday morning, causing minor damages to two apartment buildings there. This is the first time that Gilo was under fire in the morning hours since the outbreak more than 10 months ago of the Israeli- Palestinian bloody conflict, which has left nearly 700 people dead, most of them Palestinians. The Israeli army responded with heavy machine-gun fire. The shooting on Gilo came after a large Israeli army force made a three-hour incursion into the Palestinian-controlled West Bank city of Jenin overnight and destroyed several buildings and two police stations there. The Israeli troops came under fire from Palestinians who resisted the operation. There were no casualties to the Israeli troops but three Palestinian policemen were reportedly injured. Israel Radio quoted Israeli government sources as saying that the operation was in response to a string of suicide bombing attacks that have emanated from Jenin, many of which were carried out by the Islamic Jihad (or Holy War). "This is a signal to the Palestinian (National) Authority (PNA), which is doing nothing to stop those carrying out attacks," said Transport Minister Ephraim Sneh, adding that "the PNA is paying a price for this." Sneh said that the government has "no intention of re-conquering Area A," which is fully controlled by the Palestinians. The Palestinians have condemned the Israeli incursion and called for an immediate meeting by the United Nations Security Council to discuss the Israeli operation. In another development, an Israeli woman and her baby were wounded in the day in a shooting attack near the Tarkumiah junction, west of the West Bank town of Hebron. Enditem 2) China Opposes Israel's Occupation of Palestinian Office In East Jerusalem ========================================== BEIJING, August 14 (Xinhua) -- China strongly urges Israel to withdraw unconditionally from Orient House, the Palestinian representative office in east Jerusalem, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said Tuesday. She stressed that China opposes Israel's occupation of Palestinian office in east Jerusalem, and pointed out that the action goes against agreements between Israel and Palestine, and has escalated the tension in the Middle East. "We strongly urge Israel to keep its promise and withdraw from the building, to avoid further deterioration of the situation, so as to pave the way for easing tension and resuming negotiations," Zhang said. ::: Enditem ::: 3) World Community Urged to Protect Palestinians From Israeli Brutalities ======================================= GAZA, August 14 (Xinhua) -- A senior Palestinian official called on the international community Tuesday morning to immediately take measures to protect the Palestinian people from further Israeli aggressions. "Israeli re-occupation of Jenin was not a surprise to the Palestinian people," Palestinian cabinet minister Saeb Erekat told the Voice of Palestine radio while slamming Israeli troops' entering the West Bank city earlier. "The Israeli government under hardline (Prime Minister Ariel) Sharon intends to impose a new fact on the Palestinian people," said Erekat, Palestinian senior negotiator with Israel. Early Tuesday morning, Israeli troops, covered by tanks and helicopter gunships, entered Jenin, which was handed over to Palestinian rule in 1995, and destroyed several buildings and police stations. Israeli army said that the operation was in response to "a series of terror attacks," including a Palestinian suicide bombing at a cafe near Israel's northern city of Haifa, in which 15 Israelis were wounded. Erekat stressed that Israel would not have security and stability if it does not end occupation of Palestinian territories, not withdraw to the border prior to the 1967 Middle East War and not implement the relevant United Nations resolutions. He urged the world community, especially the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - to "immediately take effective steps to protect the Palestinian people from Israeli aggressions." ::: Enditem ::: "Without a Peoples Army the people have nothing" Mao _________________________________________________ KOMINFORM P.O.
