1) TRANSPORT POLICE REFUTES REPORTS OF SOME MASS MEDIA THAT A MAN WAS
KNOCKED DOWN BY NORTH KOREAN LEADER'S SPECIAL TRAIN

IRKUTSK, August 14, 2001. /From RIA Novosti correspondent Alexander Batalin/
-- The transport police of the Irkutsk Region (Siberia) has refuted reports
spread by some mass media that a local resident had been knocked down by
North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's special train.

The RIA Novosti correspondent learned from the Interior Affairs transport
department of Irkutsk Region that the man was knocked down not by the
armoured train, but the shunting locomotive that followed it.

The accident took place on Monday at about 23 o'clock local time at Meget
station some 30 km from Irkutsk soon after the special train passed through
the station. 

When crossing over the railway track Alexander Babich, 52-year-old worker of
a local hardware plant, was knocked down by the locomotive that followed the
special train and died on the spot.

The Interior Ministry is specifying all the details of the accident. No
criminal case has as yet been opened on it.

2) KIM JONG-IL GIVES RECEPTION TO MARK KOREA'S LIBERATION FROM JAPANESE
COLONIAL DOMINATION IN TRAIN

KHABAROVSK, AUGUST 14, 2001. /From RIA Novosti Correspondent Yevgeny
Bugayenko/ North Korean leader Kim Jong-il is giving a gala reception in his
train to mark the anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial
domination. 

RIA Novosti learned from the apparatus of the Russian President's
plenipotentiary representative in the Far Eastern Federal District that Kim
Jong-il had invited members of the Russian delegation led by Konstantin
Pulikovsky, the Russian President's plenipotentiary representative in the
Far Eastern Federal District, to the reception.

The celebration and gala reception are held in the Korean international
government train which is on its way from Moscow to Hasan (a railway station
in Primorye Territory on the North Korean border).

Observers note that this is the first time in the history of North Korea
that the country's leader is marking the Anniversary of Liberation abroad.

In connection with the Korean national holiday marked on August 15,
Konstantin Pulikovsky conveyed to Kim Jong-il cordial congratulations from
the people of Russia and from himself personally. Pulikovsky wished the
North Korean leader happiness and good health, and successes and prosperity
to the people of the republic.
