Activities mark August Revolution Day
Many cultural activities to mark the 56th anniversary of the August
Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2) are being held across
the country. This is aimed at disseminating information on Vietnamese
revolutionary tradition and the country's achievements recorded during 56
years of national construction, particularly in the national renovation
process.
The departments of culture and information of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and
other cities and provinces have held many art performances. They also
displayed panels, posters and slogans on the national revolutionary
tradition, the national construction and disseminated information on the
results of the Ninth Party Congress.
In Hanoi, the Vietnam Revolutionary Museum opened a showroom entitled '56
Years of National Construction and Defence under President Ho Chi Minh's
Path.' The Ho Chi Minh, Army, Fine Arts, History and Ethnology museums also
opened display rooms with new exhibits and artefacts.
Many art troupes organised new programmes. Vietnamese films are being
screened in cinemas to serve all people, including those in remote and
far-flung areas.
Radio and television stations have organised television singing contests.
Many art and sports activities have been held in mountainous provinces,
attracting many local people's participation.

Ordinances on lawyers, plant protection and quarantine made public
Vietnam's Ordinances on Lawyers, and Plant Protection and Quarantine
(revised) were introduced at a press briefing held on August 17, by the
State President's Office.
These ordinances were approved by the National Assembly Standing Committee
of the 10th Legislature on July 25, 2001.
The Ordinance on Plant Protection and Quarantine will serve as a legal basis
to strengthen State management in the area, targetting a sustainable
agricultural production, good environment, and an ecological balance.
The Ordinance, which consists of seven chapters, 45 articles, will take
effect as from January 1, 2002 and replace the 1993 ordinance.
The Ordinance on lawyers was revised to ensure rights of defendants, protect
legal concerned persons' rights, and meet individuals and organisations'
growing demand for legal consultancy, thus contributing to protecting the
socialist legal system.
The Ordinance, containing seven chapters, 45 articles, will take effect as
from October 1, 2001 and replace the 1987 Ordinance of Lawyers'
Organisations. (VNA)

Laos, Vietnam plan exchange sports visits
Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem has welcomed the exchange of visits
between sportsmen and women and sports committee officials of Vietnam and
Laos.
Mr Khiem told this to the visiting minister and chairman of the Lao National
Sports Committee, Phuthoong Sengakhom, in Hanoi on August 17, adding the
visits aim to share experiences in the field and make preparations for the
21st South East Asian Games (SEA Games) scheduled to be held in Malaysia in
September this year.
He said the two sports committees' activities had contributed to
strengthening the special solidarity and friendship between the Parties,
States and people of Vietnam and Laos.
Deputy PM Khiem affirmed that the Vietnamese government had put proper
investment in sports development.
Minister Phuthoong Sengakhom expressed thanks to the Vietnamese government
and the Vietnam National Sports Committee for their current training of 72
Lao athletes who will take part in the 21st SEA Games. He said he hoped
athletics co-operation between the two countries would further develop.

Public security veterans praised for great contribution
Public Security Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Tinh expressed the deep gratitude
of the Vietnamese people to generations of public security staff for their
great contribution to security and order protection over half a century.
Meeting with veterans of the sector in Hanoi on August 17 on the occasion of
the sector's 56th founding anniversary (August 19, 1945 - August 19, 2001),
Deputy Minister Tinh said that in any revolutionary period, the People's
Security deserved to be a key tool loyal to the Party, State and socialism
and people. He further said that the achievements, glorious tradition and
growth of the People's Security were attributed to the great services made
by security veterans and martyrs. Mr Tinh also said public security staff
now always respected and forever remembered the dedication of veterans and
would pool their efforts to build up a revolutionary, regular and modern
People's Security and fulfil all tasks assigned by the Party and people.

Downpour submerges 500 houses in Binh Phuoc
Heavy rain fell in Binh Phuoc southern province from August 16 afternoon to
early morning of the next day, making the water level of streams increase by
three to five metres and submerging 500 riverside houses along the Rat
stream and hundreds of hectares of vegetables.
The heavy downpour hit Dong Tam commune in Dong Phu district with more than
100 houses deep under water. Many houses were flooded to their roofs. One
hundred and fifty houses in Dong Xoai town were also under water.

People move from land-eroded places
Many places along the Huong and Bo rivers in Thua Thien - Hue central
province are suffering land erosion with a total length of over 28
kilometres. In order to ensure safety for the locals, the provincial
authorities have deployed 15 out of 21 resettlement sites for 1,248
households.
In recent years, the province has raised capital to build over nine
kilometres of embankment to help prevent landslides.
