Naxals attack police station in Orissa

HUBANESWAR: For the second time this month outlawed People's War Group
(PWG) activists attacked Motu police station in Orissa's Malkangiri
district and opened fire late on Sunday night.

Director general of police Nimai Charan Padhi said the firefight with the
police lasted for four hours before the naxalites, armed with sophisticated
weapons and numbering 200, retreated. There was no casualty on the police
side. A combing operation was underway, the DGP said.

The PWG had killed five policemen in a simultaneous attack on the Motu and
Kalimela police stations on August 9. Padhi said the police were fully
prepared to meet the threat of armed struggle against the state announced
by the PWG which had declared certain districts of Andhra Pradesh, southern
districts of Orissa and Bastar region of Chhattisgarh as "composite
guerilla zones".

According to an official report from Malkangiri, a PWG leader at a meeting
attended by about 300 local tribals in an interior village near Kalimela on
August 23 had announced that the ultras would attack police stations if the
Orissa government deployed the police in the area.

The PWG leader identified as Loknath had said Malkangiri was a "liberated
zone" and the presence of the police would not be tolerated, the report
added.
