President Luong's RoK visit successful
    

The visit to the Republic of Korea (RoK) has successfully helped bring the
relationship between the two countries to a higher level in the 21st
century, said President Tran Duc Luong before leaving Seoul on August 25.�

Mr Luong said leaders of the two countries pledged to enhance co-operation
in the interest of the two peoples and for peace, co-operation, development,
and prosperity in the Asian-Pacific region and the world as a whole.

He also expressed satisfaction about the fine development of the two
countries' co-operative ties over the recent past.

Earlier, Mr Luong visited a production line of the Hyundai group which has
deployed several projects in Vietnam such as a steel factory in Hanoi's
suburban Dong Anh district and the Vinaship Shipyard in central coastal
Khanh Hoa province.

President Luong praised Hyundai's Vinaship Shipyard project, saying with its
regional scale, it has made major contributions to Vietnam's ship-building
industry.

He said he wanted the RoK industrial giant to contribute more to boosting
the two countries' economic, trade and investment co-operation, as well as
to further help Vietnamese partners in personnel training, the transfer of
technology, and the upgrade of equipment. (VNA)

Leaders congratulate General Giap on 90th birthday

Many leaders of the Party and State came to congratulate General Vo Nguyen
Giap on his 90th birthday.

President Tran Duc Luong, who was in the Republic of Korea for an official
friendship visit, on August 24, sent a basket of flowers and congratulations
to General Giap.

National Assembly chairman and Politburo member Nguyen Van An called on
General Giap on August 25. He said he wished General Giap the best of
health, longevity and further contributions to the revolutionary cause of
the Party and people during the national construction, defence and
renovation.

The same day, former General Secretary and former advisor to the Party
Central Committee Do Muoi also visited Mr Giap on his birthday.

Former Prime Minister and former advisor to the Party Central Committee Vo
Van Kiet, from Ho Chi Minh City, sent flowers to General Giap.

Vice President Nguyen Thi Binh called on to congratulate General Giap on
August 24.

Cambodian leaders welcome Party delegation

King Norodom Sihanouk welcomed a delegation of the Communist Party of
Vietnam (CPV) led by Nguyen Van Son, member of the CPV Central Committee and
director of the Party's Commission for External Relations, on August 25 in
Phnom Penh. 

The CPV delegation has been in Cambodia at the invitation of the two
coalition ruling parties - the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), and the
National United Front for a Co-operative, Independent, Neutral and Peaceful
Cambodia (FUNCINPEC).

King Norodom Sihanouk recalled his good memories of Vietnam and praised the
Vietnamese people's heroic struggles for national independence in the past
and national construction at present under the leadership of the CPV. He
thanked the Vietnamese Party, State, and people for their valuable support
for Cambodia and said he believed in further development of the two
countries' fine traditional relations.

Mr Son expressed his pleasure to witness the Cambodian people's great
achievements in national construction under the leadership of the King and
the alliance of the CPP and FUNCINPEC. He reiterated Vietnam's policy of
attaching importance to fostering Vietnam-Cambodia solidarity and friendly
ties for sustainable stability.

CPP President and Senate President Samdech Chea Sim, Prime Minister Hun Sen
and First Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly Heng Samrin received the
Vietnamese delegation on August 23. The same day, the delegation held talks
with a CPP delegation led by permanent member of the Standing Board of the
CPP Central Committee, Say Chum.

The Vietnamese delegation had a cordial meeting with FUNCINPEC President and
Chairman of the National Assembly Prince Ranariddh on August 24. It also
held talks with a FUNCINPEC delegation led by its General Secretary Prince,
Norodom Sinvirut.

Senior officials of the CPP, FUNCINPEC, the Cambodian National Assembly,
Senate, and the Royal government warmly welcomed the Vietnamese Party
delegation, congratulated the success of the CPV's Ninth National Congress,
and praised the Vietnamese people's achievements in the current renovation
process. They said they hoped that traditional friendly ties between Vietnam
and Cambodia would be further promoted.

During talks between the CPV, CPP, and FUNCINPEC delegations, the three
informed each other of the situation in their respective organisations,
exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern, and
discussed measures to promote their relations with a view to strengthening
the two countries' relations in the spirit of the June 1999 Vietnam-Cambodia
joint declaration, ie to further consolidate and promote the relationship of
fine neighbourliness and traditional solidarity between the two countries in
the interest of both peoples and for peace, co-operation, friendship, and
development in the region and the world at large.

Mr Son affirmed Vietnam's unchanged policy of promoting friendship and
traditional co-operation with neighbouring countries including Cambodia. He
wished the Cambodian people new achievements in building a Cambodia of
peace, reconciliation, neutrality, unity, non-alignment and prosperity.

Vietnam, Cambodia's customs to step up smuggling fight

Vietnam and Cambodia have agreed to promote the exchange of information on
customs activities and co-operation in fighting smuggling, trade fraud, and
illegal transportation of drugs, weapons, and explosives.

The agreement was made during the Cambodia visit from August 23 by Vietnam's
General Department of Customs General Director Nguyen Duc Kien.

Both sides discussed drastic measures to boost co-operation and create
favourable conditions for the two countries' trade relations within the
framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the
World Customs Organisation (WCO). To this end, they will now organise annual
customs meetings for their border provinces.

The Vietnamese delegation ended its visit on August 26. (VNA)

Young writers' conference opens

More than 180 young writers across the country attended the sixth National
Young Writers' Conference opened on August 27 at the Ho Chi Minh Museum,
Hanoi.

The three-day conference aims at handing over the tasks for young writers, a
key force of the country's literature in the 21st century.

Delegates planned to discuss current affairs in the creative works of young
writers, exchange with newspapers and publishing houses, visit the Da river
hydro power plant and hold poem and music nights. This is a chance for young
writers to exchange their opinions and hopes, thus being able to contribute
more to the country's literature in the new period.

Hundreds of houses damaged by rains, whirlwind

Heavy rains along with whirlwind caused losses in property in Mo Duc
district and Duc Phu, Duc Thanh, Duc Minh communes of Quang Ngai province on
August 25.
