The 'moles' - nine of them recruited from the British army - WANT us to identify them because they claim their Whitehall handlers ditched them after the Good Friday peace deal. And the angry ten - all Northern Ireland Catholics from nationalist backgrounds - are starting a legal battle to FORCE the Ministry of Defence into giving them new identities. They want fresh lives like those allocated to 18-year-olds Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, the killers of Liverpool toddler Jamie Bulger. The ex-agents - who say they also killed Royal Ulster Constabulary officers, planted bombs, tortured enemies and kneecapped youngsters in their undercover roles - will be represented by top lawyer Imran Khan in a case that will cost taxpayers 10 million. Mr Khan, who acted for the family of murdered London teenager Stephen Lawrence, will argue that the MoD broke their contract with the agents. Writs will be served in the next few weeks. And actions for post-traumatic stress could follow which would make the bill even MORE. Scared Some of the ex-agents served up to 13 years with the Provos posing as disgruntled ex-servicemen. They had to carry out appalling deeds like kidnapping entire families to ensure that the IRA commanders were completely taken in by them. But they argue that, in the long run, they saved hundreds of lives by passing on vital intelligence. Yet they say they were dumped after republicans won places in Ulster's Stormont assembly in 1998. But the ten men have NO army pensions and some are too scared to take jobs or sign on the dole for fear of being traced by the IRA. They use false names and none can go back to their homes in Northern Ireland. So they have banded together and launched a campaign for justice called Save the Moles. Their leader WILLIE CARLIN is bravely using his real name in his battle against the government. The 50-year-old is a former Queen's Royal Irish Hussar who became the right-hand man of Sinn Fein boss Martin McGuinness. He said last night: "We deserve recognition. Men who risked their lives daily have been denied employment rights. You can't pretend to be a terrorist. That's why these British soldiers had to live and kill as terrorists. "The problem for Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon is that to recognise their achievement he's also got to acknowledge state-sponsored killings. "We've got nothing on paper. It had to be that way for our records to appear genuine when the IRA checked them out." The other ex-agents go under the names of: Stephen McLoughlin, an ex-Royal Irish Ranger, 33, who killed at least one British soldier and was involved in torturing rival republicans. He lives in the north of England. Kevin McGonagle, 35, an ex-soldier who infiltrated the Provos in West Belfast and joined in kneecappings and gun attacks on RUC foot patrols. An RUC officer died. John Gormley, 45, an ex-Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer who shot dead an RUC man outside a church. Martin O'Connor, 31, an ex-Queen's Royal Irish Hussar who shot down an Army helicopter over South Armagh in 1987 injuring troops. Michael Doherty, an ex-soldier in his thirties who guided the SAS to two IRA men who were then shot dead. Doherty lives in the north of England. Paul McDonough, an ex-soldier who served six years with the IRA and shot and severely disabled an RUC officer. Michael Meenan, an ex-Household Cavalry member in his forties who trained IRA snipers who went on to kill two RUC men and three soldiers. The ninth man, an ex-soldier, cannot be identified even by his false name for legal reasons. And the tenth is a civilian never in the army. Tory MP Andrew Hunter said last night: "I'm convinced the thrust of their accusations are correct." The MoD refused to comment. _________________________________________________ KOMINFORM P.O.
