CubaNews summary - Sept. 17, 2001
============================
Not much about Cuba in the media today. GRANMA's
website remains down. Other Cuban sites are up.
====================================

Hundreds rallied for peace and against a military response
to the terrorist attacks in Washington and New York. These
events are not widely reported in the mainstream media
which is beating the drums for war. However, multic-cultural,
cross-denominational and other kinds of activities are now
springing up in the US.

CUBA RALLIES AGAINST TERRORISM,
SUPPORTS U.S. PEOPLE

HAVANA -- (AP) -- During a weekly rally normally reserved to
criticize the United States, the Cuban government condemned
terrorism and repeated its support of the American people
after attacks in the United States destroyed the World Trade
Center and part of the Pentagon.

Saturday's rally was given the theme: ``Our solidarity with
the American people during the national tragedy they are
living through.''

Defense Minister Raul Castro, President Fidel Castro's
brother, presided over the gathering in Majibacoa, a small
town 410 miles east of Havana.

One by one, the dozens of speakers condemned the attacks on
the United States and criticized the four-decade U.S. embargo
against the island, among other U.S. policies.

The speeches echoed ideas expressed by Castro on Tuesday,
hours after the attacks.

The Cuban president lamented the ``unbelievable'' acts.

"WARNING" WAITS HERE FOR GLOBAL FUGITIVES
A special unit of federal officers in Miami is tracking down
various global fugitives. Read this interesting note:

Alien smuggler Jos Lpez-Larrondo, a Cuban citizen who
violated his bond, is now serving a 30-month sentence at the
Federal Correctional Institute in Miami. On June 12, agents
got his co-defendant, Fernando Mndez-Nodarse, who got 60
months at the correctional institute.

``We have a special type of fugitive here in South Florida,''
said Pete Cajigal, a supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal who heads
the fugitive section. ``You have a person who has ready access
to large sums of cash and to assets that can be turned into
cash. With ready access to false identification, they can
basically treat borders as nonexistent -- they can hop from
country to country the way in the U.S. we can drive from state
to state.

``Because Miami has such a cosmopolitan makeup of citizens
from other countries, fugitives from those countries can
sometimes find a safe haven and support in these
communities.''

NEGROPONTE APPROVED FOR U.N. POST
This was quietly slipped through last week. It's
analyzed for a Miami Herald opinion column by:
Joseph E. Mulligan, a Jesuit priest from Detroit,
works in Nicaragua and is investigating the
disappearance of the Rev. James ``Guadalupe''
Carney.

LATIN GRAMMYS FINAL CONCERT
During a quickly assembled benefit concert by stranded Latin
Grammy nominees Friday night, recording academy officials said
they are still trying to reschedule the awards telecast, which
was canceled after last week's terrorist attacks.

Cuba's visiting artists also shared the stage and the
evening's spirit of compassion. Following his dazzling solo at
the piano, Havana's Chucho Valdes stood alone on the
sidelines, swaying gently to "The Star-Spangled Banner," his
long arms held respectfully at his sides. "It's important to
participate in some fashion, to show unity and help however we
can," said Valdes.

The show closed with a rousing encore by Cuban singer Issac
Delgado, featuring a guest vocal by Panama's Blades. The two
stars were surrounded by reporters and well-wishers as they
left the ballroom together. At the door, Blades turned to
thank a trio of uniformed policemen, who seemed taken aback by
the attention. "Take care, man," the singer said, shaking
hands with the officers one by one.

WILD RIDE FOR STOCKS
EXPECTED TODAY
As the New York Stock Exchange reopens, a wild
ride is expected. Many calls have been made to
fight terrorism by buying stocks. The government
has lowered interest rates to encourage spending.
Big investors like Warren Buffett say they are now
going to buy, buy, buy. Consumers are encouraged
to spend, spend, spend for the same reasons.

FAITH-BASED INVESTMENT SCAMS
FLEECING FOLLOWERS OF BILLIONS

Read the full story, but here's just a start:

Over the last three years, about 90,000 Americans have lost
roughly $1.8 billion to frauds that use God as a lure,
according to the North American Securities Administrators
Assn., a group representing state securities regulators
nationwide.

Those numbers have soared since securities regulators last
looked at the problem. In a 1989 study, regulators found that
$450 million had been lost by about 15,000 investors over a
five-year period.

"In a shorter period of time, more people were scammed and a
greater amount of money was lost," said Marc Beauchamp,
executive director of the securities administrators
association. "It is a major concern to state securities
regulators."

As with most types of frauds, the statistics probably
understate the problem. Regulators count only the frauds
they've uncovered and say there undoubtedly are many that
haven't been detected.

The surge in religion-oriented frauds is attributed to several
factors, including an overall rise in so-called affinity
scams, regulators said. To target their pitches, affinity-scam
promoters use some specific knowledge and a sense of belonging
and trust within a group--be it a church or fraternity, school
or profession. Unsuspecting victims often are used to help
sell the bogus investment through word of mouth.
