DOMINANT MEDIA BEATS WAR DRUMS
But alternative voices are beginning to warn of
the dangers of wider war. Foreign leaders are
encouraging restraint by the US. Peace marches
and vigils are being organized in the US. Some
of this is reflected in NPR coverage. The best
coverage remains on DEMOCRACY NOW IN
EXILE and Pacifica station KPFA in Berkeley.

Not surprisingly, the only member of the US
congress who opposed the blank check given
to Washington was Berkeley congressmember
Barbara Lee, who holds Ron Dellums' seat.
She received threats after her decisive action.

CUBAN CATHOLIC CHURCH SPEAKS OUT
Cuban Catholic Church is Greatly
Disturbed for Terrorism in the US

Havana, Sep 17 (PL) Cuba"s Catholic Church voiced
yesterday its distress due to recent terrorist attacks in the
US -causing thousands of death- during a mass given by
Cardinal Jaime Ortega. Diplomats and officials from various
embassies to Havana were present at the church, packed with
over 300 persons. In his homily, the cardinal, who is also
Havana"s archbishop stressed that "unjustice always causes
indignation, but justice is not reestablished with hatred and
revenge or through violent means." The priest stated that
humanity is threatened by decisions men can take and asked if
a destructive behaviour can globally spread by fans or even by
laws and resolutions which do not take into account human
beings. Then, Ortega said that the world"s real globalization
forced us to think more in humanity, to get out from our
enclosure, leave behind our false securities and find new ways
of understanding, solidarity and love.

CUBAN ROUND TABLE LOOKS AT 9-11 AFTERMATH

War Atmosphere Still Present in USA

Havana, Sept 18 (AIN) The war atmosphere that prevails in the
United States and the state of shock and fear prevailing in
that country today centered the activities of the daily radio
and television round table in Cuba.

The star space in Cuban radio and TV denounced how the war
drums strongly sounding at the White House and dragging the US
population called by politicians into cheap patriotism and
calls to violence .

The panelists gave details of the intense war preparations
that the US is making by calling hundreds of thousands of
reservists to get ready for the announced attack to
Afghanistan for giving shelter to Osama Bin Laden , the main
suspect in the whole affair.

The war atmosphere was served when Don Rumsfeld , US Defense
Secretary, spoke about the risks of new terrorist actions that
might take place within the atmosphere of xenophobe against
the Arab population inside the country.

In Afghanistan and neighboring countries it was reported that
the lack of security has made a lot of people to live the
country while the frontiers are being closed.

The journalists present at the meeting spoke about President
Bushs lack of leadership while the Vice President Dick Cheney
is slowly taking over .

Among these strange circumstances the New York authorities
confirmed the disappearance of over five thousand 422 persons
and the recovery of 201 corpses at the ruins of the World
Trade Center.

It was reported that while that city tries to return to
normality this Monday the main indicators of the New York
Stock Exchange suffered historical losses, especially the
insurance companies ,which must pay over thirty billion
dollars and the shares of airlines. Right and reason will
impose themselves, thats todays challenge.

LATIN MUSICIANS RESPOND TO 9-11
The Miami Herald reports on how Latin Musician are
responding to 9-11, including producing songs for
to raise funds for survivors (and, of course, songs
to build support for war moods, too), but they did
manage to include this:

Eighteen musicians, gathered from around the Latin music world
for an awards show that had suddenly become unimportant,
performed for 400 people summoned by phone that day. The
concert raised close to $20,000 with donations from Griffin
and the Recording Academy pushing the total to $40,000. . The
artists included salsa singers Celia Cruz and Ruben Blades,
Miami's Bacilos, Mexican pop star Paulina Rubio, Colombian
alt-rockers Aterciopelados and singer/songwriter Juanes, and
Cuban musicians Isaac Delgado (whose musicians donated blood)
and Chucho Valds.

AFGHANS AND IRANIANS ARRESTED IN CARIBBEAN
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- (AP) -- The terrorist attacks in the
United States are sparking mass detentions and arrests of
Arabs, Afghanis and others of Middle East descent across the
Caribbean. Some say the terrorist attacks have prompted
authorities to unlawfully harass and detain people based on
looks alone.

FRANCISCO ARUCA'S RADIO PROGRESO
Aruca reports on efforts by counterrevolutionary Cuba
exile groups to try to pin terrorism on Cuba. Callers to
his program take this topic up. Aruca stresses how at
this moment, when U.S. public opinion wants strong
steps to be taken against terrorism, these rightists are
trying to block or disredit efforts made by the U.S. to
consult Cuba and to see how Cuba can collaborate in
the struggle against such attacks as was seen at 9-11.

WALTER CRONKITE WANTS CENSORSHIP BOARD
Retired CBS news anchorman Walter Cronkite called for the
immediate appointment of a censorship board to monitor the
strict secrecy that Ashcroft has announced. Cronkite said that
secrecy is necessary in the war against terrorism, but that
the government should immediately appoint a board of
journalists and historians that will be aware of all the
government's plans and actions. Secrecy must not be used to
protect political decisions or government failures, but only
for military purposes, Cronkite said.

RUSSIAN MOVES TOWARD CLOSER CUBA TIES
A growing number of regions across Russia that decisively
rebuffed Communist candidates in the early years after the
fall of the Soviet Union have come to embrace them again, part
of what political analysts call an increasing protest against
the failure of Russian capitalism to bring better living
conditions to the regions outside of Moscow. With the Nizhny
Novgorod election, "red governors" now control executive power
in 35 of Russia's 89 regions.

The numbers, too, suggest that the Communists are doing
slightly better than just holding on to their base. Last
month, they came within two percentage points of ousting an
incumbent governor in the Siberian region of Irkutsk, another
perceived bastion of economic reforms. In the Ivanov region,
northeast of Moscow, a Communist elected eight months ago
brags about higher wages and paying off energy debts. Oleg
Kulikov, the national party's number two leader, said new
enrollments are up 10 percent this year and that the party has
550,000 members.

"We want to be known as a party of the future and not as a
party of the past," said Kulikov. "They are always trying to
pull us back to the past. But we are a democratic party now
that represents a broad spectrum of the population; we
understand that it's not possible to go back." At the same
time, Kulikov expressed his support for restoring Volgograd's
Soviet-era name, Stalingrad, after Soviet dictator Joseph
Stalin, a pet project of Communists at the moment, and praised
Putin for restoring "our traditional close ties" with
communist Cuba and North Korea.
