Germany Reported Ready to Take Command of New NATO
Mission

BERLIN, Sep 24, 2001 -- (Agence France Presse) Germany
is ready to take command of a new NATO mission in
Macedonia once the present operation to collect ethnic
Albanian rebel arms is completed, according to the
Sunday edition of Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine
Sonntagszeitung newspaper.

The report, referring to sources close to the German
government, said Berlin made the proposal last week at
NATO, after Britain's decision not to supply forces
for the follow-up to Operation Essential Harvest.

The current mission, which is in its final phase, is
due to end on Wednesday.

A smaller contingent of a few hundred soldiers
composed of French, German and Italian units is due to
remain, together with logistical and helicopter
support from the United States.

This force would protect observers from the European
Union and Europe's OSCE security organization who will
check whether a peace accord, which still has to be
implemented by the Macedonian parliament, is being
respected.

But the newspaper report says the German proposal must
first be clearly defined by NATO before getting final
approval from the UN.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said on Thursday
that Germany was ready to provide soldiers for the new
mission.

remain in the country ((c) 2001 Agence France Presse)
