Polish left victory confirmed
===================

Official results from the Polish general elections on Sunday have confirmed
a sweeping victory by the party of the reformed Communists, the Democratic
Left Alliance, or SLD.

The social democrat party won 41% of the popular vote, but failed to get an
overall majority in the important lower house of the parliament.

It must now decide whether it will form a minority administration, or enter
a coalition with one of the smaller parties, to tackle growing economic
problems and speed up the country's membership talks with the European
Union.

The results also show that Solidarity, which led the previous government,
failed to win a single seat in the parliament.
