From: "reg" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [Peoples War] Journalist Murdered by Loyalists in N. Ireland from the Oread Daily DEATH OF A JOURNALIST Sinn Fin's chief negotiator, Martin McGuinness, called today for the Northern Ireland Secretary Dr Reid to "stop the nonsense" and declare the UDA cease-fire over. His call came in light of the murder of Dublin based Sunday World journalist Martin O'Hagan. Yesterday the Red Hand Defenders, a cover name used in the past by the Ulster Defense Association and the Loyalist Volunteer Force, took "credit" for the killing. The killers cited O'Hagan's reports on the Protestant militant underworld as the reason for his murder. O'Hagan had long been hated by Protestant militants because of his reports on leading paramilitary figures, their many murders and criminal rackets. O'Hagan, 51, had been walking back to his home with his wife in his hometown of Lurgan when shots fired from a passing car struck him in the head. "Those who have carried out this heinous act have absolutely nothing to offer the people of Northern Ireland except fear and silence," said Irish Foreign Minister Brian Cowen. The slaying represented "an assault on one of the fundamental principles of any democratic society - an independent and unfettered media." The loyalist death squad which murdered Mr O'Hagan may also have assassinated prominent human rights lawyer Rosemary Nelson in the same town in 1999. Both O'Hagan and Nelson were connected to allegations that an "inner circle" existed in the 1980's linking some members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary, businessmen and clergy to killer gangs. Following a week of Loyalist violence Dr. Reid on Friday had declared the UDA had one more chance. It's unclear what he thinks now.
