FARC to Evacuate Neutral Zone in 48 Hours if Peace Talks Stall
 ============================================

BOGOTA, November 9 (Xinhua) -- The Revolutionary Armed Forces
of Colombia (FARC), the country's largest rebel force, will have
48 hours to evacuate the demilitarized zone in southern Colombia
in the event peace talks between the government and the guerrillas
break off, Defense Minister Gustavo Bell said here on Friday.

Bell, who is also vice-president of the South American country,
said this clause was included in the agreements reached between
the Colombian government and the rebels when they committed to
conducting peace talks nearly three years ago.

The 16,500-strong FARC has controlled the 42,000-square-
kilometer territory since November 7, 1998, two months before the
two sides formally launched the peace process, which was suspended
by the leftist rebels unilaterally in October to force the
government to loosen its surveillance operations on the area.

"The Armed Forces are well prepared once again to impose their
presence in the demilitarized zone at the determined time, if the
peace process fails," the defense minister told reporters.

In that event, Bell said, FARC will be granted 48 hours to
 evacuate the neutral area.
