Officers say they have prevented a repeat of the Omagh bombing. Several hundred pounds of fully-primed home-made explosives were packed into the boot of a vehicle stopped near Armagh city. One man is being questioned by detectives about the find. Army explosives experts are still examining the bomb but believe it could weigh 200 to 300lbs. Assistant Chief Constable Stephen White said: "But for good police work we would have been talking about death and another atrocity." Asked if it could have been on the same scale as the Real IRA attack on Omagh in August 1998 which killed 29 people, he said: "I suspect it could have been." The white Vauxhall Astra was stopped outside Killylea as it was heading towards Armagh city. The interception comes just 24 hours after police uncovered a haul of weapons in Lurgan, County Armagh, which is being linked to dissident republicans. Mr White said the car bomb also had all the hallmarks of a splinter republican terror group. Although he was unable to confirm which faction he said: "In that area we have had a number of Real IRA attacks and Real IRA activity."
