The Israeli military said the incursion came after mortar shells and a rocket were fired towards the Israeli settlement of Dugit. The army said troops killed two armed Palestinians heading to the settlement. The Palestinian police chief in Gaza, Brig Gen Abdel Razek Majaida, alleged that the policemen were shot dead by Israeli troops while lying wounded on the ground. The army had no immediate comment. Palestinian doctors said the tanks drove over the bodies. Officials added the incursion began last night when two tanks and an armoured personnel carrier drove into the coastal neighbourhood of Sudaniyeh in the town of Beit Lahia. The armoured vehicles fired machine guns and shells. Two shells punched holes into the private American International School, which has American teachers and is attended by Palestinian children. The United States has demanded that Israel stay out of Palestinian territory. However, Israel has argued that it has to carry out such raids to prevent attacks by Palestinian militants. Last month, Israeli troops seized parts of six Palestinian towns in the West Bank, in response to the assassination of an Israeli Cabinet minister by Palestinian militants. After a gradual pull back, including a withdrawal this weekend from the town of Tulkarem, troops now remain only in the town of Jenin.
