Subject: [L-I] US to buy Kyrgyz weapons for Afghan opposition

AFP. 5 October 2001. US to buy Kyrgyz weapons for Afghan opposition:
source.

BISHKEK -- The United States wants to buy "a lot of weapons and
ammunition" for Afghanistan's anti-Taliban forces from the former Soviet
republic of Kyrgyzstan, a senior Kyrgyz official said Friday.

"We have received a quite unexpected offer from officials in Washington
in terms of further cooperation in the fight against international
terrorism," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"President Bush's administration has expressed readiness to buy in
Kyrgyzstan a lot of weapons and ammunition for the Northern Alliance,"
he said.

He said the United States would begin by purchasing cartridges for
automatic weapons.

Kyrgyzstan has the only weapons plant in Central Asia, built in the
Soviet times, and is the only one in Central Asia.

The Northern Alliance is the main opposition force to the Taliban regime
in Afghanistan, which the United States has accused of harbouring Osama
bin Laden, the prime suspect in the September 11 terrorist attacks in
the US.
