Vietnam strongly opposes terrorist acts: FM spokesperson "Vietnam strongly opposes terrorist acts and supports efforts to make humankind free from terrorism," said the spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry in Hanoi on October 11. The spokesperson was answering a question raised by Vietnam News Agency correspondent on the country's position toward terrorist acts against Vietnam as other countries are taking co-operative measures against terrorism. Vietnam holds that anti-terrorist measures should be conducted in conformity with the United Nations Charter and international law, the spokesperson said. In this spirit, Vietnam believes that all countries should have a unanimous attitude toward terrorism by not supporting, harbouring and concealing terrorists or those with terrorist schemes against Vietnam. They should co-operate with Vietnam in preventing and severely punishing those who mastermind or carry out terrorist schemes against the State and people of Vietnam inside the country and at Vietnamese representative offices abroad, the spokesperson said. (VNA) **** Vietnam takes over AIPO secretariat office Director of the Vietnamese National Assembly Office Vu Mao, who is also serving as General Secretary of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organisation (AIPO), took over the Office of the AIPO Standing Secretariat in Jakarta on October 11. General Secretary of Thai National Assembly and former AIPO General Secretary, Sirilak Panbamrungkit, and General Secretary of Indonesian Legislature, Sari Sumarjati, attended the event. During his stay in Jakarta, Director Mao paid a courtesy visit to Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Indonesian Legislature Akbar Tandjung, to whom he conveyed a letter from National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An. He expressed his hope that the traditional friendship and co-operation between the national assemblies and people of Vietnam and Indonesia would be promoted, particularly during the 2001-02 period when Vietnam takes over the AIPO presidency. They pledged to join efforts to make AIPO stronger, a useful forum for law makers of member countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), and a representive for the legistimate rights of the South East Asian people, promoting peace, stability, and co-operation in the region and the world at large. Speaker Tanjung expressed his belief that during its AIPO presidency, the Vietnamese National Assembly would fulfill its noble tasks, contributing to enhancing friendship and co-operation among national assemblies and peoples of South East Asian nations. Mao also exchanged views with the Chairman of the Commission for External Relations and AIPO Co-operation Committee, the General Secretary of Indonesian Legislature, and the ASEAN General Secretary. The Vietnamese National Assembly took over the AIPO presidency from Thailand at the 22nd AIPO General Assembly held from September 2-7 in Bangkok. This is Vietnam's first time serving as president of the AIPO, an organisation it joined in September of 1995. (VNA) **** Vietnam to host ASEAN civil service conference The 11th ASEAN conference on civil service matters (ACCSM) will take place in Hanoi from October 16-18, a government official said. The conference, themed 'ASEAN civil services for dynamic and sustainable development,' is expected to draw representatives from all of the ten ASEAN member countries, the ASEAN Secretariat, and ambassadors of ASEAN countries in Hanoi. Representatives from dialogue partners including Australia, Belgium, Denmark, and Japan as well as some members of international and foreign non-governmental organisations will also attend. The conference aims to strengthen the cohesiveness of ASEAN by providing a forum through which its member countries can share experiences and ideas with each other. The conference is also intended to promote the efficiency of their co-operation programmes in the near future. Vietnam officially joined the ACCSM in 1997. The first ACCSM conference was held in the Philippines in July of 1981. The ensuing conferences were held in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei. (VNA) **** Chinese youth delegation visits port city A delegation of the Chinese youth led by Zhou Qiang, first secretary of the Communist Youth League of China on October 11, visited the northern port city of Haiphong. The Chinese youth delegation is in Vietnam for a friendship meeting between Vietnamese and Chinese youth from October 10-15. The delegation was received by Tran Huy Nang, chairman of the municipal People's Committee and Nguyen Thi Nghia, secretary of the municipal Communist Youth Union, among others. The delegation was informed of the city's socio-economic achievements and asked to further cement their friendly relations with Vietnamese youth by helping the latter participate in exchanges with Chinese youth in order to share experiences in culture, industry, agriculture, fisheries, and tourism.
