THE TIMES (London)
FRIDAY OCTOBER 12 2001

"Abkhazia's leader, Vladislav Ardzinba, has appealed
to President Putin to 'thwart Georgia's policy of
state terrorism' and prevent a war."

Guerrillas fire on Russian peacekeepers

FROM VANORA BENNETT IN MOSCOW

GUERRILLAS last night fired on Russian peacekeeping
soldiers in Abkhazia, the breakaway region of Georgia.
The guerrillas tried to enter Abkhazia but were
repelled when Russian soldiers opened fire, according
to Garry Kupalba, an Abkhazian politician.
The episode is the latest skirmish in a simmering
conflict on Russias southern frontier. It has
increased so sharply that Moscow has sent troops to
reinforce its border. Newspapers are referring to the
fighting as a new arena for the war on terrorism.

The violence in the volatile Caucasus mountains, near
Chechnya, has worsened already strained relations
between Russia and its small neighbour, Georgia.

Georgia said yesterday that, like Russia, it was
moving armed units to the conflict zone. The
separatist region between Georgia and Russia claimed
de facto independence in 1993 after a war in the early
1990s.

Abkhazias leader, Vladislav Ardzinba, has appealed to
President Putin to thwart Georgias policy of state
terrorism and prevent a war.

The roots of the new conflict lie in Chechnya, which
shares a border with Georgia. Since Russia sent troops
into Chechnya in 1999 to quell separatism, it has
accused Georgia of harbouring guerrillas among the
6,000 Chechen refugees that Georgia has admitted.

Georgia denies all Russias charges, but in the past
week 200 armed Chechens and Georgians have broken into
Abkhazia from Georgia. Abkhazian officials say they
were trying to enter Russia, but were beaten back into
the Kodori Gorge, a lawless no mans land.

On Monday a helicopter with five UN military observers
was shot down over the gorge, killing all nine people
on board. Abkhazia says it was shot down by the
Chechen and Georgian fighters, who are now encircled
by Abkhazian forces near the crash site.

On Tuesday unmarked aircraft bombed villages along the
Kodori Gorge. Russia and Georgia are accusing each
other of having sent them.
