BOGOTA, January 1 (Xinhuanet) -- At least 10 soldiers and police
officers were killed in attacks waged by the Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia (FARC) over the New Year holiday in different
areas of Colombia, the military said on Tuesday.

The rebel attacks came just ahead of the scheduled government-
rebel peace talks on Thursday.

The army's acting commander General Euclides Sanchez said the
most intense attack occurred in the western town of Coconuto, some
450 kilometers southwest of the capital Bogota. Two police
officers and eight soldiers were killed trying to fend off the
rebels.

FARC rebels also made a raid on a military base in eastern
Arauca state near the border with Venezuela. No reports of
casualties have been reported yet.

FARC, the largest guerrilla group in Colombia, has been
fighting the government for control of the country for nearly four
decades. Peace talks were initiated with the government of
President Andres Pastrana in 1999.
