INLA warns of loyalist threat to its ceasefire
By Anne Madden

The INLA has warned that continuing loyalists attacks against
nationalists could force an end to its ceasefire.

In a statement released yesterday the republican group reaffirmed its
ceasefire but said it viewed "with increasing concern the
escalating attacks on the nationalist working class by hate filled
loyalism".

The paramilitary group warned that a republican response
is "inevitable" unless there is an end to such attacks which
have affected North Belfast in particular.

The group also called for the release of Dessie O'Hare from jail
in the Republic, claiming he is entitled to be freed under the terms
of the Good Friday agreement.

In addition, the statement dismissed press reports that the INLA is
involved in the drug trade.

"We reaffirm our ceasefire decision of August 22 1998 but view
with increasing concern the escalating attacks on the nationalist
working-class by hate filled loyalism.

"We warn that such attacks put an almost impossible strain on
republicans. Unless there is a halt then a republican response is
inevitable," the statement, released through the group's political
wing, the IRSP, said.

However, it was denounced last night as "cynical and
menacing" by SDLP assembly member for North Belfast Alban
Maginness.

"They have no right to make threats and risk destabilising a
relatively peaceful situation in Belfast and Northern Ireland,"
Mr Maginness said.

"Throughout their history the INLA have shown themselves to be
hostile to the interests of the Catholic and nationalist community.

"They have caused more death and destruction to Catholics than
anybody else, so it ill-fits them to claim to be defenders of the
nationalist or Catholic community.

He added: "It is a very cynical and menacing statement
indeed."

[Poster's note: Mr. Maginness is worse than cynical with his claims about
the INLA. A quick look at the Sutton Index of Deaths easily disproves his
claims.]
