Korean farmers turn out in new year's farming preparations
Pyongyang, January 5 (KCNA) -- Officials and peasants of the Chongsan
Cooperative Farm in Kangso district, Nampho, are making brisk preparations
for this year's farming, full of confidence and optimism, in hearty response
to the New Year's joint editorial. Workteams and sub-workteams of the farm
have carried much compost to the fields.
The farm is steadily doing farming preparations such as selection,
keeping and treating of seed while successfully conducting the dissemination
of scientific and technological knowledge and the technical guidance over
the farming processes. It has also built up the greenhouse to cultivate
several species of vegetables even in winter.
Meanwhile, brisk agitation activities are being conducted in the fields
to inspire the farmers in the preparations for New Year's farming.

Dignity of Juche Korea demonstrated
Pyongyang, January 5 (KCNA) -- The dignity of Juche Korea was fully
demonstrated last year, says Rodong Sinmun in a by-lined article today. The
Korean people look back upon the last one year with higher pride,
self-respect and greater happiness than any other people of the world, it
says, and goes on:
This national pride and self-respect of the Korean people find their
expression in the fact that the dignity of Juche Korea was fully
demonstrated as it has the great leader.
Last year witnessed a very complicated situation.
The United States had made every possible effort for hegemonism in
pursuance of the policy of strength.
The Bush administration pursued a hardline policy towards the DPRK,
backpedaling Korea policy of the preceding regime. The U.S. tried to stifle
the DPRK by force of arms so as to demonstrate the "effectiveness" of its
hardline policy and, through it, bring other revolutionary and progressive
countries to their knees without much difficulty.
Now that the situation changed and the U.S. intensified its hostile
policy towards the DPRK, leader Kim Jong Il, who is possessed of rare wisdom
and scientific insight, adopted a revolutionary measure to react to the
hardline policy of the enemies with the toughest policy and powerfully
encouraged the army and people to the defence of the country and socialist
construction. The great army-based policy shattered to pieces a foolish
attempt of the imperialist bellicose elements to bring the DPRK to its knees
by use of force. It created an international environment favorable for the
Korean revolution and increased international solidarity with the Korean
people in their cause of justice.
Kim Jong Il's visits to China and Russia had a great impact on the
changes in the world political structure. The visits marked historic events
of weighty importance in boosting the friendly relations with those
countries to meet the needs of the new century. They also marked a momentous
occasion in pushing forward the human cause of peace and independence.
Last year a top-level EU delegation paid a visit to the DPRK and the EU
established diplomatic relations with the DPRK. All this was a clear proof
of a new development of DPRK-Europe relationship and of the worldwide
expansion of the DPRK's external relations. It was a product of independent
foreign policy of the Workers' Party of Korea and the DPRK government.
Last year also witnessed strengthened support and solidarity for the
Korean people in the international arena.
Indeed, in the year 2001 the dignity and honor of Juche Korea were
exalted as never before and the prestige of the DPRK was fully demonstrated
before the world.

Gift to Kim Jong Il from Nepal
Pyongyang, January 5 (KCNA) -- Leader Kim Jong Il received a gift from
the Central Committee of the Nepal Communist Party (United
Marxist-Leninist). The gift is a product of the painstaking search and
efforts made by leading members of the party and famous metal craftsmen in
Nepal for several months.
A ceremony of conveying the gift took place in the building of the c.c.,
the Nepal Communist Party (UML) on Dec. 31 last year.
General secretary of the party Madhav Kumar Nepal handed it to the DPRK
ambassador to Nepal.
Madhav Kumar Nepal said that the gift is associated with the expectation
and desire of the Nepalese people and the progressives who wish the Korean
people greater success in building a powerful socialist nation and great
advance and victory in their struggle for peace and reunification of the
Korean peninsula and the global socialist cause in 2002 under the wise
leadership of Kim Jong Il.

New scientific and technological books come off press
Pyongyang, January 5 (KCNA) -- Many scientific and technological books
are being published in the DPRK. The science and encyclopedia publishing
house brought out over ten scientific and technological books such as
"Program Language" (computer basics), "Actuality and Depiction of
Photographic Art", "Plastic Surgery", "Digestive Surgery", and "Clinical
Surgery of Hypertensive Cerebral Hyperemia".
"Plastic Surgery" deals with theoretical and practical issues arising in
putting congenital and postnatal disorder or morphological abnormal symptom
to a normal condition or a condition close to normal.
"Clinical surgery of hypertensive cerebral hyperemia" shows clinical
experience and achievements gained in clinical surgery practice of
hypertensive cerebral hyperemia for many years and information gathered from
inside and outside the country.
"Computer language" and "change of marine resource and its management",
"questions and answers as to technology related to sea culture" and others
were published by the industrial publishing house.
"Computer language" contains at least 3,000 words of hardware and
software which had been developed until Juche 89 (2000). These words are
given in a Korean alphabetical order.
Last year also witnessed the publication of many other scientific and
technological books including "biosphere sanctuary of Mt. Paektu" and
"Taking Care of Hen" by the Agricultural Publishing House, the Railway
Publishing House and the Sports and Physical Culture Publishing House.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Police investigation denounced in S. Korea
Pyongyang, January 5 (KCNA) -- The South Korean Federation of University
Student Councils reportedly released a statement on Dec. 27 last year
condemning the police authorities for arresting students and putting them
under threatening investigation. The statement said:
The South Korean police authorities unreasonably arrested Ko Min Su,
student of the Ryongin branch of the university of foreign studies, and put
him under an intimidating interrogation in a bid to arrest the participants
in the recent people's meeting held in seoul.
The authorities' intimidation of leading members of the people's
solidarity, the (South) Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the
"National Federation of Peasants Associations" is intended to crack down
upon the struggle of the workers, peasants and students by creating an
atmosphere of "public security."
The authorities should apologize for unwarrantedly questioning Ko Min Su
and send him back to his family. We will fight against the police
authorities if they label the students as "rioters" and treat them as
criminals once again.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Korean nation called upon to protect its destiny
Pyongyang, January 5 (KCNA) -- The Korean people should protect their
destiny, says Rodong Sinmun today in a by-lined article. The Koreans should
stand against the aggression and war moves of outsiders and their followers
and work hard to remove the danger of war so as to preserve peace on the
Korean peninsula and reunify the country independently, come what may, it
says, and continues:
Outsiders never protect the destiny of the Korean people, but always
seek to plunge them into the holocaust of aggression and war.
Flunkeyism and dependence on outsiders lead the country to ruin. That is
a lesson drawn by the Korean people from their long distress-torn history.
All the Koreans should have the transparent idea of national
independence that they should preserve their destiny by their own efforts.
No force on earth can defeat the united Korean people. All the Koreans
in the north and south of Korea and abroad should be imbued with the spirit
of national independence and get united under the banner of the spirit. Only
then can they beat the bellicose elements and partitionists at home and
abroad in their moves for aggression and war.
All the Koreans should work hard to preserve the June 15 North-South
Joint Declaration and put it into practice properly so as to demonstrate
their spirit of independence and their united strength.
